The goal of the books in this series (Attacking 101: Volume #nnn) is to provide detailed analysis of my own attack games played against lower rated players. The players are all rated in the range of 1000 to 1800 - the types of players you would frequently encounter at your local chess club, local tournaments, online, and at home. They make the same errors you regularly witness in your games but here you get to see a Chess Master dissect and exploit the moves, show why they are wrong, and how to punish the opponent's poor play.

The mind of a chessmaster is a beautiful thing.
By Thomas M. Peterson
I love to fight on the chessboard. My philosophy is get the pieces out to the right places and coordinate an attack. However, this book has shown me there is a second equally important factor to winning: controlling your opponent. This book is teaching me the methods that go on behind the scenes that lead to inevitable wins. Through Joel's 3 books I am getting an excellent winning education.
I like to keep my best chess sources secret, but I have to give credit where credit is due. This book is aimed at the improving player. Thanks again Joel for helping us break into the expert ranks.

Lots of blitz games - but you will learn something
By Randall K Julian
I bought both of Joel's first two books and found them a bit odd and definitely overpriced for what they provided. This book is much better and even though it follows the same pattern as the first two (lots of ICC blitz games), the book delivers on its claim of showing how a strong player (even in a fast game) punishes bad moves by weak players. I like his advice that beginners learn how to play for an attack or the initiative in exchange for material (I, for one, know I am too materialistic). The other books from this author suggest some off-beat lines, an approach supported by some and not by others (both of my coaches don't like the idea of playing side-lines), this one is no different. However, the section on playing White against the French by playing Qd3 caught my attention. I could not find this move in any opening book I have, but when I play though his games and do a little analysis, it's clear that it doesn't give all that much up, and as usual, the weaker opponents just self destruct; so the 0.25 pawn advantage Qd3 might give up (not sure - you engine's milage may vary...), doesn't really matter. It got me thinking about how to play against all the weird stuff you see in weekend tournaments and how something that you might think is just bad may not really be terrible, nor may it be some crazy, unsound trappy crap - it just might be the fourth or fifth best move on the list and you are still going to have to play good chess to win.
I'm sure Joel is a really good player - I would have preferred to see such a good teacher (his comments and annotations are very easy to understand), show us his serious games in slow time controls.

Great book
By voltron
Excellent book. All to often I have been told one of the best ways to learn chess is to study the game of Grand masters. This is true, but too often many of those books are written by GM for GM. I found myself not understanding why white or black was better off in a certain position bc it is often assumed to be obvious. Then I got into studying chess imbalances and books like the art of attack. These books helped, but I seemed to have stagnated as well due to few examples. Something was missing for me. Then I got this book. The book is a master playing a lower rated player. This was perfect because as you go through the games the authors is basically pointing out the imbalances and and showing how he is going to exploit them. There are tons of examples in this book, so it was great to see how weakeness are spotted and what to do. After going through this book, I found that annotated games of GM v. GM seemed to make more sense. Moves that had previously stumped me in GM games now make sense to me. So this is an excellent book to use after you have gone through a book on imballances like Sillmans book or the art of attack. You basically are applying what you learn in those books, with lots of examples. The way I describe this book is like precalculus. Its the course you should take before you take calculus (studying GM vs GM games) So its a great book. But I recommended this as a follow up to any other book on imbalances, not a first book. The way i used this book, is after reading Sillmans book, I applied the ideas that book to the games in this book but with an attacking slant. I played the games out on my ipad, after the opening phase i would cover Joel Johnsons move and see if i could predict it, and then read the annotation on the move. I found this to be a great way to imrpove my chess skills. This works well with gm vs gm games as well, but if you are starting off, with this technique you should try it with games of master vs weaker opponents first.
