In Serres's beautifully written (and translated) prose, this philosophical treatise critiques society's perceived "right to kill" or devastate Biogea (the entirety of the Earth and the living species), and proposes a Natural Contract that takes into consideration its necessary circulation.
He writes intimately about the rivers and seas and mountains and volcanoes of Biogea, as though they were his lovers: he listens and describes sensitively to us both their orgasms and their death throes. He receptively attempts to connect with and directly perceive Biogea's internal voice, in an audacious critique of objectivity, Serres rewrites Descartes "I think, therefore I am" with "I think, therefore I flow into…". Yearning to "think like the Earth", "see like the sea", ….
