About the Author

Dr Charles Guest has worked in government and academic public health in Australia and elsewhere, following graduation from Melbourne, Deakin and Harvard Universities. After medical registration in 1980 and clinical practice in Melbourne, he joined the Epidemic Intelligence Service, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, posted to the New York City Department of Health in 1984. Subsequently, he undertook research on chronic disease in Australian Aborigines, communicable disease and environmental health. He is currently a Senior Specialist in Population Health, Australian Capital Territory Government, and Adjunct Professor in the College of Medicine, Biology and Environment, Australian National University.

Professor Walter Ricciardi is the Director of the Institute of Hygiene, Universita Cattolica del Sacro Cuore, Rome. He graduated from the University of Naples (Medicine and Surgery) in 1984, specialised in Hygiene and Preventive Medicine in 1988 and obtained his MSc (Community Medicine) at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine in 1989. Since 1993 he has held a number of key positions including President of the European Public Health Association, and has undertaken work with the World Health Organisation and the European Union. He is a Fellow of the Faculty of Public Health Medicine, Royal Colleges of Physicians of the United Kingdom and is a Member of the National Board of Medical Examiners, USA.


Dr Ichiro Kawachi is Professor of Social Epidemiology, and Chairman of the Department of Society, Human Development and Health, at the Harvard School of Public Health. Kawachi received his medical degree and Ph.D. (epidemiology) from the University of Otago, New Zealand. He is the author of over 400 articles on the social and economic determinants of population health. He was the co-editor (with Lisa Berkman) of the first textbook on Social Epidemiology, published by Oxford University Press in 2000. He is also Senior Editor of the Social Epidemiology section of the international journal Social Science & Medicine. He has served as an advisor to the WHO, the World Bank, and the Pan American Health Organization.


Dr Iain Lang is a Consultant in Public Health with NHS Devon Primary Care Trust and a Senior Lecturer in Public Health based at the National Institute for Health Research Peninsula Collaboration for Leadership in Applied Health Research and Care (PenCLAHRC), Peninsula College of Medicine and Dentistry, Exeter, UK. His practice and research interests are in the health of middle-aged and older people, quality of care, and health service improvement.

Public health practice: a concise, useful, portable pocket-sized volume

This is the third edition of TOHoPHP, just published in 2013. It runs to 629 pages including index, a compact softcover volume small enough to fit in a pocket or handbag.

The book contains 7 major sections further subdivided, the whole publication very well organized. The major sections are:

1 Scoping public health
2 Data and information
3 Direct action
4 Policy arenas
5 Health care systems
6 Personal effectiveness
7 Organizations

The writing style is lively and engaging, with just the right amount of informative content for the professional without getting bogged down in minutiae. For example the excellent sections on qualitative methods and epidemiological design, and on the real meaning and use of statistics, are demystified in clear language and a joy to read.

There are very good sections on developing leadership skills, managing effective meetings, `effective writing' and `working with the media' which readers may find relevant to their professional skillset even if they are not engaged in public health. There is even a sub-section on how to develop a business plan and construct a business case - skills more useful than ever before to those working at senior levels in public health.

Overall: a great little book, packed with pertinent advice not only for health care professionals but for those working in related areas. The level of literacy and proofreading are as exemplary as one would expect from this publisher. The highlight-colour of the text is pale green and the book is supplied with two ribbons, one white and one green, as page-marks. The editors have succeeded in making what might have been a work of dry academia into an engaging and useful volume designed to be carried around and used, rather than gather dust on a shelf.

A brilliant analysis of Israel's economic miracle.

A trenchant analysis of Israel's economic miracle. Particularly innovative and creative is their exposition of the role of nicknames in contemporary Israeli culture. We have "Bibi" (Netanyahu), "Bu`zi" Hertzog, "Raful" (Rafael Eitan) "Bayge" (Shochat) and "Gandi" (Zeevy); not to mention "Teddy" (Koleck) "Golda" (Meyerson) and of course "B-G" (Ben-Gurion).
Israel is the land of endless informality where people go to weddings wearing jeans the parliament passed a by law forbidding its members from appearing at parliamentary sessions in short pants. They said nothing about wearing sandals. These nicknames (which are an integral part of Israeli culture) lend an air of easy acquaintance, contact and availability - everybody knows everybody. Senor and Singer argue that this norm of nicknames enables information in organizations to go from the "bottom" to the "top" and not exclusively from "top" to "bottom". This enables crucial information to get to the decision makers and correction of policy based on information from members of the organization who are at the front lines. Panegyric but engrossing

Startup Nation reveals aspects about Israel's economy, zeitgeist and history in an interwoven manner that is quite engrossing. It underlines the same formula which has worked in Silicon Valley i.e. Academic excellence plus risk taking plus Government contracts or funding. But the role of the Israeli military in tech entrepreneurship is quite unique and surprising because normally the strong hierarchical structure and risk aversion of militaries is considered at loggerheads with an entrepreneurial mindset. The Israeli defence forces apparently encourage continual change and challenge if not iconoclasm, which suits innovation. The book also serves as a hortatory promotion of the state of Israel, it's ethos, raisin d'être, and policies, which is unabashedly biased; that does not detract however from the often fascinating and hopefully important and useful insights.

How Israel Started a VC Industry

This is an excellent description of the motivations for establishing a finance industry in Israel and how it affected the growth of new companies in the country. It is well documented, gives excellent insight into the development of a venture industry, Israel's national business incubator program, and integration of the military and business communities into a highly interdependent community. It's well written and holds one's attention throughout.

Another Engaging Read from A. L. Tyler

In this second book of the Waldgrave trilogy, Lena Collins finds herself torn between the expectations placed on her by the Silenti and her desire to live her own life. The burden of living trapped within Waldgrave, considered a holy figure by some and by others a symbol of the apocalypse, pushes her to find a solution to clear her name and simultaneously win back her freedom. Amid the stirrings of revolution from the lower classes of Silenti, Lena seeks to find the missing holy relic that will sever the ties that bind her to Waldgrave and undermine her grandfather's attempts to manipulate her and everyone around her. Constantly questioning who she can trust, Lena discovers a hidden secret that could send the Silenti spiraling into a civil war that could bring down everything and everyone.

Armed with my very positive impression of the first book of the series, Arrival of the Traveler, I was eager to follow Lena as her journey continued through this book. I also came with a smidgen of hesitation, as I worried that this story might be affected by the middle-book-of-a-trilogy-disease; a book that connects details and explains things but is generally less engaging when considered next to the first and last installments. I'm delighted to report I needn't have worried. This story engages the reader in a whole new level of character development, pushing and pulling us from one side to the other while simultaneously wondering if we should trust anything out of Griffin's mouth.

Spending time engaging the reader in the play between the Silenti elite and those they deem as only qualified to be their maids and servants was a nice counterpoint in this novel. As I read this story while watching Occupy Wall Street really coming into itself, it served to accentuate and explore the division between the Haves and Have Nots. While there was a fair amount of interaction between Lena and those in the serving class, I wanted more development of their mutual relationship. I think the later sections of the book would take on even more import with more progression of these relationships earlier in the story.

Overall, Deception of the Magician was yet another engaging read from A. L. Tyler, full of mystery and intrigue linked by an unpredictable storyline and great characters. I'm left wondering where she will take things next, and am eager to read the third installment in the series.

The only, and best manual for your Boxster

I've been working on cars since I can remember and can do just about anything, but the mid engine layout of the Boxster has made it a little more challenging. This manual is the best I've ever seen, even better than Chilton's series. It shows clearly how to perform simple (change oil) and complex (change clutch assembly) maintenance, how to access the darn motor, etc. Pictures are clearly labeled, anyone could pick up this book and do most any procedure. Complete electrical diagrams are a nice touch too. Lots of nice extras include full specs, year to year changes, performance specs, part #'s, etc. If you have a Boxster, you know how much they charge for basic maintenance, buy this manual and save yourself a bundle. Put that $$ you saved into some performance parts :)

It's what I expected

Don't expect this book to go into intimate detail on all of the topics that it covers; it is mainly about getting you familliar with the 97-2004 models. The book is big and contains good pictures. I would recommend it to anyone who wants to learn more about their car. If you just want to learn how to do regular maintenance, grab this. If you want to learn how to do more complex things, like replacing your convertible top, you will need the porsche tech manual.

Good Resource

I have always done my own brakes, but I hadn't done them yet for the Boxster. The dealer quoted me over $800 to just change pads/sensors. The book gave me all the info I needed to do the job for $139. Worth every penny.

As an aside, I have never changed brakes that were so simple.

About the Author
Gloria Konig Fiero was born and raised in New York City. She earned her Masters degree in Art History at the University of California, Berkeley, and her Ph.D. in Interdisciplinary Humanities at the Florida State University. She has taught Humanities, World History, and Art History for more than twenty-five years. She has written and lectured extensively on medieval and renaissance topics and on the arts of both East and West as they reflect the human condition. Good book for school

This is a good book for someone mildly interested in history. Check facts though and don't believe everything you read out of this. If you are buying it for school purposes, it is extremely close to the 5th edition, so if you need a cheaper version, the 5th is almost identical. Good book overall, very educational and easy to read and understand. Great seller though, ships quick and everything was smooth.

A Humanististic Deception in Academia

Meanwhile this book is touted as one of the finest books for the study of the Humanities; I have some serious concerns about his book. Sometimes this book engages in revisionist conceptions. It instructs readers that some texts of the Koran where Muslim men are instructed to beat their wives are misunderstood. Then it engages in specious reasoning to justify why this is misunderstood. It notes that the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John are written 100 years after the death of Christ which is arguable. In a subtle way we are led to believe that the message of Christ lacks credibility as a message that is only taken down a century after Christ. On the other hand the Islamic contention that the Koran is a heavenly revelation, unspoiled by unscrupulous editors and political agendas remain uncontroverted. There is very little effort to emphasize that the Christianity of the West was primarily Catholicism, and that even in Western
Europe there was a variety of Christian views during the Middle Ages. Often times instructors come to Academia with notions about what a subject should be and that a subject is too filled with academic dishonesty is not worthy of addressing in full. This book should never be the stand-alone text for a course because it lacks that level of credibility. I purchased a new book, but was shipped a used book.

I was doing some last minute shopping before the fall semester came around and needed the first two books in this series. I placed the order with Kuycorp via Amazon for this book. I noticed that when it came, there was some wear but thought that might have just been from shipping and storage. When I finally got to the point where I needed this book for class, I noticed that there was pen marks on many pages, scuffs, fingerprint marks, and even a makeshift bookmark. I'm pretty disappointed in the fact that I was given a used book when I made the point of getting it new. The book itself is insightful and quite useful if someone is taking a humanities class.

"CHASING MAVERICKS" is heartwarming in relationships, heart-wrenching as we learn the true definition of a close-call in a near-death situation, and powerfully moving as we learn about pushing your limits. The surfing champion rides the huge waves, faces scary consequences, but his spirit for love of surfing never discourages him to quit. His will-power and determination are incredible. This book is as thrilling and as intriguing as the movie, which leaves the viewer mesmerized as we feel as if we are there, while the ocean's stunning waves come to life. Both the book and the movie are interesting, amazing, and addictive! The touching story also includes life's ups-and-downs, and the importance of relationships and mentors in our lives. As a beach-lover from the Northeast, forty-five years of my life, I would indeed watch the movie again, and enjoyed the book very much. A delightful, inspiring page-turner! Highly Recommended!

About the Author
Daniel is a direct and fun individual, who really loves his profession. By looking at this cheerful chef, you understand that what you see is a professional that loves what he does. He is from the Francophone part of Canada (Montreal, Quebec). Cooking is his profession. Traveling is his lifestyle. Now, it's been 20 years that Daniel has traveled and worked as a chef worldwide: Argentina, China, Japan, England, Ireland, Thailand, Germany, Norway, Australia, New Zealand, Italy, Spain, and Netherlands. Surprisingly, in his youth, this Canadian wanted to dedicate his life to hockey. But a Meniscus trauma prevented the fulfillment. Not having good enough examination results made it impossible for him to join the Police. In result, Daniel decided to try out cooking. Starting in Canada, he soon moved to Japan and worked in Tokyo sushi-bars as a chef's apprentice. After three years, Roy unexpectedly got offered to become a chef. Various, prestigious restaurants started inviting him by offering large amounts of money. But, Daniel chose another path. In 1998, he left to a small French village to apprehend the cooking secrets of his ancestors. The cook decided that only direct contact with locals allowed him to perceive the smallest details about the national cuisine. Then followed Thailand, Australia, and Argentina. Already in 2001, he opened his first restaurant in Canada. Now, his empire consists of 9 (concept-restaurants), 8 of which are out of Canada. Roy finds time to guide a school of cooking art and is thinking about leading the publishing office. Traveling became his second passion. By traveling, he finds new inspirations for cooking — that's his secret to success. People in all countries love the food that is offered in Roy restaurants, because it's not only tasty, but also exceptional. Daniel generously shares his secrets, thinking that you can copy a recipe but not the soul of a cook.

I love bbq and I must say Daniel is a bbq genius, I personally tried a lot of his recipes, these days we can even use grill on microwave but no one really knows all the secrets this book has lot of those tips to make a nice bbq to remember

You can't get bored of the meat cooked on fire: Shiny sauce, some garnish, the mixture of smoke's odor and spices give you a special smell that you can't forget. The process of cooking is very complicated, where all of your movements need to be sharpened over all the years that you cook, same amount of time goes for finding the perfect ingredients.
In Daniel Roy's book you won't find any debates like which kind of meat is better, why that marinade is the proper one, instead you'll find lots of recipes on how to cook meat and not only. All of that followed by interesting stories and rips of an experienced traveler and cook.

I love cooking, and one of the best way to cook food is through grilling. However, most of us are guilty about just putting that piece of meat on top of a hot charcoal, and that's it. After reading this book, it further explained to me why it is important to also choose the best charcoal, to get the best taste of meat. The recipes are also mouth watering, I also felt hungry after reading the book. What I liked the most about this book is the life hack that was given after the recipe, I got a lot of tips and guides and I will surely apply it to my next barbecue party.

Great book, very helpful

This book is a fine, understandable guide for anybody considering a stem cell treatment. It was written by a stem cell researcher at the University of California, but does not bog down in technical information. The goal of the author is to explain complex scientific issues in a way we can all understand. The author has faced a grave illness and knows firsthand the type of pressures that they can generate. He was diagnosed with an aggressive form of prostate cancer at the age of 42, a very young age to come down with that affliction. Going through that experience was one of the important reasons he wrote this book - to help other persons like himself who are trying to come to grips with difficult medical and scientific matters. If you are one of those persons, I recommend the book highly. If you are just seeking more information about stem cell research, it has clear and forthright explanations about the field. Stem Cells 101

As a stem cell scientist and now editor, I've read a fair few non-fiction science books in my time. Most struggle with the task of presenting complicated data and theories to a general readership, and the resulting manuscript is usually dense, convoluted, and packed with jargon. By contrast, Stem Cells: An Insider's Guide is easily accessible and moreover is entertaining - a key ingredient for many readers.

The book is a whirlwind tour through the world of stem cells. It discusses not only the basic science, but more thorny issues like ethics, regulation, and the patient-doctor perspective. For a stem cell scientist, it is at times too simple. But that is deliberate, as any additional complexity would probably deter a wider audience. For the patient, this book can read like a self-help guide, and in many ways it is: questions will be answered, and the resources to find out more are provided. The book is largely US-centric, which is expected given the author's background.

In short, there's something in here for everyone. This book is best for those who want to find out more about stem cells: what they are, what they can do, what they can't do, how they are used currently and what promises they hold for the future.

Making the science accessible

It is very rare to find a scientist who can write eloquently about a very technical, complex, controversial subject and make it understandable and accessible to the general public. This book is exactly what it purports to be...an insider's guide to the galaxy of stem cells. Regenerative medicine and the future of personalized medicine are revolutionary topics even among the select group of scientists who DO understand the complex technicalities. Dr. Knoepfler does a masterful job of explaining what we should all have learned in high school science and are now reading about in the newspaper or hearing about on TV and radio. After you finish reading this book, please consider donating a copy to your local public library. I would encourage anyone who wants to support our future STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) students to get this book into school science curriculums and libraries. Should be required reading for all medical school students.
