Continuing coverage of the Pirc

Vigus intends this book as an update to his earlier Pirc in Black and White. Of note for players of the Pirc, he responds to Greet's recommendations (published in 2011) as well as going off in a few new directions. As with the earlier, more comprehensive work, Vigus organizes the contents around 50 stem games, with only one played in 2006 and all the rest played subsequently. He quotes quite a bit from the practice of the top GM's, including Ivanchuk, Kramnik and Svidler (as Black) and Karjakin, Shirov and Caruana (as White), as well as offering his own improvements and analysis. Although Vigus is definitely an advocate of the Black side of the Pirc, he is also generally pragmatic about the lines where Black faces the greatest challenges. And, as is common for this series, shout-out boxes point to key developments, warnings, interesting ideas, and the like.

There are a few key lines where Vigus says there is nothing to add since his earlier book, so this is definitely more of an update than a standalone repertoire. But for the player who wants to make a serious attempt at taking up the Pirc, TPIBAW and the present volume make an excellent and highly up-to-date brace of training manuals.

Arnold G. Fruchtenbaum, Th.M., Ph.D, is one of the foremost authorities on the nation of Israel, and is a messianic Jewish believer. This has made him a popular speaker and teacher at Bible conferences, congregations, and churches throughout the world. He received his B.A. from Cedarville University, his Th.M from Dallas Theological Seminary, and his Ph.D. from New York University. His graduate work also includes studies at the Jewish Theological Seminary in New York and the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Based in San Antonio, TX he is the founder of Ariel Ministries, which is dedicated to evangelism of Jewish people and discipleship of Jewish and Gentile believers from a messianic Jewish frame of reference.

Arnold Fructembaum's insight and wisdom on this great "seed plot" of the Bible helps the reader to understand in a new way, the covenants and God's plan for His creation. He gives us new understanding of an orderly, lovely and creative God who has a grand design for mankind that will never be thwarted by our enemy, Satan. Thank God for scholars such as this. What a blessing they are to the student of the Bible, no matter what your level of understanding.

About the Author

John Tobey received his BA in mathematics from Wheaton College in Wheaton, Illinois in 1965, his MA in mathematics education from Harvard University in 1966, and his PhD in mathematics education from Boston University in 1980. He has taught in the mathematics department at the United States Military Academy at West Point and served as the Mathematics Department Chairman at North Shore Community College in Danvers, Massachusetts for five years. John has served as the president of the New England Mathematics Association of Two Year Colleges. He has received the NISOD award for outstanding teaching from the University of Texas at Austin. John is the author of seven mathematics books published by Pearson Education. John has spoken to many mathematics departments and at many professional meetings throughout the country on the topic of developmental mathematics education and distance learning in mathematics. He lives in Massachusetts.

 

Jeffrey Slater has been a professor at North Shore Community College for thirty-eight years and received the Teacher of the Year award in 2002. Jeff travels around the country speaking on student retention and is also a consultant to the Federal Government. He lives in Marblehead, Massachusetts with his wife Shelley and his yellow lab Gracie.

 

Jamie Blair has directed the Mathematics Learning Center at Orange Coast College for the past seventeen years. She designed, developed, and implemented the Center, and as a result of this effort has provided technical expertise related to the particulars of the Math Center to numerous other two-year colleges and at many conferences. In 2007 Jamie was appointed to the Team of Basic Skills Specialist by the California State Academic Senate. She is also currently participating on Title 3 committees on her campus. She specializes in teaching students who have never been successful in mathematics. She is an expert in the area of basic skills in relation to the learning needs of students. She lives in California.

 

Jennifer Crawford received her BS in mathematics from the University of Minnesota – Duluth in 1995 and her MS in mathematics from the University of Minnesota – Twin Cities in 1998. She taught a wide range of courses at North Shore Community College in Danvers, Massachusetts for five years. She currently teaches at Normandale Community College in Bloomington, Minnesota where her focus is working with developmental math students. She lives in Minneapolis, Minnesota with her husband, two young children, and black lab.

Very good book, very detailed.

I would recommend it, it really help me with my pre algebra class. I didn't need to use the access card package, so unless you really need the access code, you can always buy it without it and pay less.

Hannah Shah is a thirty-two-year-old British woman of Pakistani Muslim parentage. After she left her home in the north of England and finished her schooling, she earned a degree in Theology and Religious Studies. "My father was the Imam; my father was the mosque." The world Hannah was born into meant her father has absolute power over nearly everyone, especially his family. A sometimes dark and brutal tale, the book is overwhelmingly a tribute the resilience of one woman's soul.

Raped by her father from the age of five, Hannah Shah lived in a child's pretend world to escape the horrors of her home. With imaginary Loneliness Birds from heaven coming to her rescue, she was able to survive beatings, rape, and days of being locked in a dark, silent cellar without food.

Her mother and brothers turned a blind eye to the nightmare that became her life. With the help of a school teacher, Hannah escapes. Chased, threatened with murder, and moving to dozens of houses to escape her tyrannical father, Hannah blossoms into a caring, compassionate woman, choosing to laugh, to love and to forgive.

An intense look at the inner workings of the Muslim faith how beliefs can become easily distorted and how courage comes in many forms. The Imam's Daughter is a touching and poignant novel, and author Hannah Shah, a former Muslim, is a tribute to what being a Christian means.

Remarkable Young Girl Finds Healing

I read this on a recommendation by Chuck Colson's Breakpoint ministry.
This story was daunting to my soul, as it deals with a man who is more interested in keeping his religious authority than he is with any idea of gracious protecting or nurturing of his family. His proud and haughty opinions isolate his family particularly the women. The family's reluctance to question or stand up to the father's bullying allows for the long term abuse that Hannan is forced to suffer.
It is a difficult situation when a community's allegiance and trusting willingness to their religious leader, (in this case their Imam) allows no way to question his integrity. Women who are seen as little more than baby makers have little opportunity to discuss freely or advance themselves. In this case the Imam made religious claims that were a guise to his own prejudice, ignorance and abusive behavior.
The father in this story is evil. As I read this out loud to my husband we found ourselves boiling inside for what Hannan was made to suffer. We vocally cheered when she found a way out.
Although the father's iron grip on his community wreaks havoc, the author notes that NOT all things about the culture, community and belief system are evil. "Yet there is much that needs to be broken down, built up again, and mended." Pg. 263. This is not the story of every Muslim family. But it is the story of one.

I am thankful that Hannah mustered up the courage to speak out in spite of what it cost her personally. May God continue to heal and build her up.

About the Author
Brian Flintoff is a master bone-carver, whose work is held on marae through Aotearoa and in private and public collections and museums throughout the world. He has been carving for over 35 years, and has been most influenced in his work by traditional Maori artists, as well as artists from other indigenous cultures, especially that of the West Coast Canadian Indian tribes. He is the author of Taonga Puoro: Singing Treasures, about the musical instruments of the Maori, and Brian is also widely regarded as one of Aotearoa's pre-eminent makers of Maori instruments. He works from his home studio in Nelson.
