About the Author
Peregrin Wildoak was born in Warwickshire, UK and emigrated to Perth, Western Australia at age 12, where he has lived ever since. In his youth he came into contact with the western mystery traditions and was initiated into the Golden Dawn. He has also received initiation and training in several other traditions including Wicca and an Isis Mystery School. Peregrin is a former editor of Pagan Times and Greenspirit, and co-founded the EarthDreaming tradition and the Golden Dawn Society of Western Australia.

In his review of Names and Images by Peregrin Wildoak, the British esoteric writer Gareth Knight said that the book shows that there is a magical substance in the Golden Dawn after all.
The Golden Dawn has become a bit of a joke in land of its birth. It is forever associated with people claiming high grades, flame wars, court cases, using shedloads of magical gear, and wearing the silliest of robes. In the UK magical scene you would never see a trained magician shove 7=4 under their name in public even if they were entitled to it.
It is one of the reasons that the US Golden Dawn orders have had a limited impact in the UK, because phrases like "Power Week" and other hard sell language is seen as belonging to the other side of the pond.
Many of the perceptions of the Golden Dawn are based on what has been written and its teachings. So British adepts look at this material and say "interesting... so what?" The rituals, if seen on their own, use dated language and lack magic.
In the Golden Dawn, the serious magic was printed in the 5=6 and it is that material which forms the basics of British magic today. But that is the point. It is just the basics. If you were so minded you could go through the pile of 5=6 material and understand it in a weekend. You could probably construct some pretty good experiments to try it out. But it is not magic in the way that the British magic scene works these days. They look at the GD with its huge equipment requirements and think that it is a dinosaur from the past.
To be fair they are not the only ones. There are those within the Golden Dawn community who see holes in what is available. There are calls to expand the curriculum and add material which was lacking or under developed.
In my early days of training I can't say I ranked the GD system particularly highly either. I liked the more inner approach of godforms and inner work which was touted by the Inner Light tradition. It was not until I read Pat Zalewksi's Z5 book that I saw that what the Golden Dawn did and what I was doing in the Inner Light Tradition was the same thing. Bits of what I had been told by the Whare Ra people suddenly made sense and the Golden Dawn always had an inner tradition which had never been talked about before.
Later when I became involved with the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn I started to understand that the written material which was given was just the tip of an incredibly complex iceberg. Those who thought it was all about gadding about in robes and calling yourself the Heirophant fast run aground on its unseen depths, and break up to the horrific strains of Celeon Deon.
This was not something that was just more intellectual information and none of it was written down. It was the idea which lurked behind all the written words which inspired people like Dion Fortune. But even these people missed some important stuff which can only be seen when you have the order and its methods working in front of you.
Making those techniques real is a lifetime's work, if you look at the implications of what is said and, like Pat's Book, Peregrin's book is a good starting place for those who want to make the system real.
Peregrin's book shows the sort of work that people need to do bring the system magically to life. True at times he adds stuff, there is something on the unicursal hexagram which I have never seen before (although the Whare Ra people used it for planetary force, they did not use it the way Peregrin suggests). There is also a lot more material bringing the modern charkra system into the Golden Dawn rather than the Sphere of Sensation method which was used. Peregrin brings these in and explains them so that they are not alien.
But in my view where Names and Images is vital is when it is telling you what you are doing at this point and why.
It differs from Pat's approach, which was tied to the rituals, and instead branches out into the magical system of the 5=6. Ideas related to the INRI formula for example.
There are also rituals for the solo practitioner to try and feel the system as well as aspects. The material here is solid and is peppered with stories about Peregrin's experiences.
Yes it is a book to study, but equally it is a book to do. You can't read it but have try out stuff.
That is something which has been sadly lacking within the Modern Golden Dawn. There are systems, upon systems and then sub-systems upon sub-systems within the GD, but that becomes a trap.
All golden dawn work has to be seen on four different levels and only a hint of what magic is really about.
Peregrin's book is the harbinger of what the Golden Dawn will become. It is an introduction to the idea of a magical Golden Dawn which is firmly rooted within the Inner. It might even be a Golden Dawn which appears new to many, certainly it is a Golden Dawn which many will want to suppress because it requires expertise that many "high graders" lack.
Nevertheless for the next generation of Golden Dawn student "By Names and Images" is a vital part of any collection.

A Personal Look at GD Ritual

I haven't read anything by Peregrin Wildoak before, but I liked "By Names and Images" very much and will watch for future titles from this author. This is a particularly good book for students who are approaching Golden Dawn ritual for the first time, because it takes some of the most challenging Golden Dawn rites and practices and puts them in a personalized, easy-to-understand context.

While Peregrin Wildoak clearly has an affinity for the practical work of the Golden Dawn, I'd caution students to take some of the author's theories with a grain of salt. For example, the author states that the use of Judeo-Christian god-names in Golden Dawn ritual might be offensive to goddess-worshipers, and seems to suggest that the divine names in these rituals can be casually replaced; this point of view seems to completely miss the Golden Dawn's Qabalistic perspective on the godhead-- namely, that God is both masculine AND feminine, and that the spiritual aspirant must embrace the divine in ALL of its aspects. The divine names invoked in various Golden Dawn rites were selected with great care and specificity, and the serious practicioner shouldn't haphazardly replace them without having both good reason and a clear understanding of any change's Qabalistic implications. While the author is undoubtedly correct in stating that certain Golden Dawn rituals are suitable for adaptation (or even wholesale appropriation) for use in ceremonial worship services, this isn't something that should be done lightly or without a great deal of consideration. A more traditional Golden Dawn approach would be to invoke, say, the goddess Isis through contact with the Qabalistic Sphere of Yesod, or the goddess Venus through contact with the Qabalistic Sphere of Netzach-- balancing feminine aspects of deity with masculine aspects of deity, and always remembering that ALL is really ONE, anyway. It seems strange to me that a book titled, "By Names and Images," would seem to miss the deeper significance of the divine names and images invoked in the context of Golden Dawn ritual. There are several other places in the text where the author clearly either misunderstands aspects of Golden Dawn Qabalistic philosophy, or chooses to dismiss this point of view due to a personal bias against it. This doesn't mean that Peregrin Wildoak is "wrong" in some of his assertions, but readers should be aware that there are other perspectives to be considered.

That note of caution aside, however, "By Names and Images" has a lot to commend it to beginning students. While Peregrin Wildoak's Qabalistic theory may occasionally be at odds with traditional Golden Dawn systems of magic and mysticism, his approach to Golden Dawn ritual as a personal, living system is right on the money! This book is the latest in a series of books which attempt to break down the complex symbolism and imagery of Golden Dawn ritual, explaining the deeper significance and meaning of each step, and putting each portion in a context where it can be understood and appreciated by the would-be student. Wildoak's continual reminder to FIND THE INNER MEANING OF THE RITUAL should be an essential part of any student's individual practice, and Wildoak does an excellent job of guiding the student step-by-step through several GD techniques, in an effort to reveal their rationale, purpose, and deeper significance. I concur with Wildoak's suggestion to experiment, following one's intuition, and taking careful note of the results. The whole idea here is to help the student internalize this work, making it a part of his or her being, instead of simply repeating a few words by rote memory with little practical understanding of that ritual's "what's," "why's," or "how's."

I can imagine that "By Names and Images" will remove several obstacles for solo practicioners who may be struggling to grasp the deeper meaning of Golden Dawn rituals, allowing them to stop READING ABOUT Golden Dawn spirituality and finally start LIVING IT. At several points as I was reading this book, I had to stop and ask myself, "Do I agree with that? Is this right?," which was a valuable exercise in and of itself! "By Names and Images" would also be an excellent book for group discussion, because there are many ideas here which would benefit from collaborative discussion and analysis-- and in this context it might even be an invaluable resource for small working-groups which are thinking about operating as a Golden Dawn-style lodge. While "By Names and Images" occasionally delves into an unconventional approach to Golden Dawn ritual and magic, it's a fresh and new approach to this subject matter and deserves to be considered in this light.

Inspiring

Readers of Peregrin Wildoak's Magic of the Ordinary blog will be familiar with one of the Golden Dawn's wisest, experienced and most compassionate voices, a man who has been bringing the Golden Dawn to life in his own way for years. Despite this being his first published book, By Names and Images has the fluency and veteran insight of someone who has a thorough knowledge of the material.

It's a difficult book to describe because it's similar to what's gone before in that it revisits a lot of the same rituals and techniques used in the Golden Dawn that you'll be familiar with if you have one of the Regardie books, but it's also completely different in terms of what it emphasizes. It may be the first of its kind to really stress visualization with a series of exercises that really should be in any manual designed to be used. In an era where magic is often confused with Harry Potter movies, curses and spells, it stresses the point that the rote repetition of a ritual will get you nowhere, what's important is what is going on in one's imagination.

Every ritual and meditative technique written about from this point onwards is wonderfully descriptive in what a person should be concentrating on as they perform, say, a Lesser Banishing Ritual of the Pentagram. Perhaps the only close correlate already published would be the lengthy visualization instructions in Israel Regardie's The Middle Pillar (in particular the Cicero edited version).

But despite what might be some of the best annotated ritual descriptions in print, there are some chapters and sections in this book that go deeply into areas less touched upon elsewhere. The (qabalistic) four worlds model, in particular, is reiterated often as a framework for other subjects and Wildoak has a fluency with it that pops up in numerous places, such as the amazing chart that shows which part of the tree each ritual intends to affect. The sections on Aura Control and Dramatic Invocation are both revelationary, expanding techniques only touched upon in the major starter books.

Wildoak explains the purpose of the Golden Dawn in his introduction. He says "The Golden Dawn is one of the many invitations by God to seek our active participation in a joint venture to heal the world, or as some Christian traditions put it, to affect the divinization of the Earth." There is no part of this book that doesn't continually reflect this purpose, the same compassion and spiritual insight I've been used to at Magic of the Ordinary. Those who find themselves allied with this outlook and purpose will find this book indispensable.

I was asked to read and give my opinion on Beautiful With You, and I was over the moon to do that, as I had loved the last two books in the series and I knew I would love this one also.

The journey for Zoey had been a long battle and once she meet Andy the trials and tribulations didn't just automatically stop right there.

There were highs and lows, good times and bad,

But through and through this love story keep those pages turning one after the other until there were no more to be turned.

The series was complete, and we now know what happens between Zoey and Andy, Do you.

It's a unevenly beautiful ride, that you must endure,

Perfect ending to a perfect series!!!!!

This book was the perfect Happily Ever After?? I was so excited that this book finally came out so I could see what happened with Zoey and Andy. This book picked up right where the second book left off. It took you on the journey of Zoey fighting for the love of her life and in the end it was worth the fight. Andy just need someone to fight for him and show him that love conquers all!! They had a roller coaster ride of ups and downs but it was worth the ride because it brought them back together. This was a wonderful book the end the series. Just hate that it's over!!

Amazing Finish to the Just Say Yes series!!!

Beautiful With You continues the love story of Zoey and Andy. He left her to go back home to New Zealand after finding out his ex-wife's heartbreaker secret she kept from him. (MUST read book 2) Zoey is left trying to keep their love going and fighting for him. She will do anything to help him heal and overcome his past the same way he helped her.
This book will make your heart break for Zoey and Andy and cheer for them to finally have their happily ever after.

Jen Andrews writes beautifully and I can't wait for her next book to come out!!! #teamjenrocks

Thomas L. McPhail is an international media critic and the Chair of Theatre, Dance, and Media Studies and Fellow in the Center for International Studies at the University of Missouri-St. Louis. He began his career with the eminent media scholar Marshall McLuhan. McPhail is author of Development Communication (Wiley-Blackwell, 2009) and has served for over a decade on the Canadian National Commission for UNESCO.

There was no suicide by asp, advises Brown; the most famous woman of antiquity was strangled on the orders of the victor of Rome’s civil wars, Octavian. Resting this belief on her reputation as a professional criminal profiler, Brown examined the sources about Cleopatra’s demise (Plutarch, Suetonius, Cassius Dio); detected defects in their descriptions of the death scene; and then traveled to Egypt in 2003 to investigate. There was more motivation to her trip than personal curiosity. Brown reveals that a TV production company enlisted her to appear in its program on Cleopatra, a natural choice because Brown’s own TV profile was high; according to her website (patbrownprofiling.com), up to 2010, she frequently appeared on tabloid TV shows to talk about crimes and criminals. Sensationalism and Conjecture

Cleopatra was as likely to have been murdered as she was to have been black: which is to say, not likely at all.
The assertion is entertaining and will no doubt sell books, but there are many reasons why Pat Brown's theories on Cleopatra---if they can even be called that---will be dismissed as nothing more than conjecture. Chief among them is the fact that Ms. Brown has no training in history or archaeology. Her expertise is in criminal profiling. It is this expertise that she attempts to apply to a 2000 year old event in which all of the participants are dust; in which there is no physical evidence to be examined; in which the only sources are a handful of Roman authors writing nearly a century after Cleopatra's death. As Brown correctly points out, these sources cannot be entirely trusted, as they were not primary witnesses, and they most definitely had agendas of their own. Yet they are our only sources. The author herself, even as she dismisses them, relies upon these Roman sources to reconstruct her profiles of Cleopatra and Octavian. As I said, these are the only sources that exist.
The error in Brown's reasoning lies in her understanding of the sources, and more importantly, in the characters of Cleopatra and Octavian. When one cuts out all of the window-dressing in this book, the heart of Brown's argument is that Cleopatra VII was strong, ambitious, and determined; she would not have committed suicide, because that would be giving up. A strong, independent woman never gives up. Therefore, her arch enemy, Octavian, must have killed her. This logic is the basis of Brown's entire argument. To support the argument Brown speculates on Octavian's motives for wanting Cleopatra dead, and more importantly for wanting to hide the fact that he killed her. This is where Brown's lack of historical training is most telling. It's a 21st Century interpretation of the 1st Century BCE, with little knowledge or understanding of 1st Century BCE culture, beliefs, or politics. In Cleopatra's world, suicide was not the act of failure that it is today; it was an act of bravery and defiance. Throughout Greco-Roman literature it was described in terms of awe.
Aside from this misinterpretation on Brown's part, her logic for Octavian's motivations are worse still. Brown's reasoning is that Octavian had Cleopatra secretly executed because she posed a real threat to his power, and because he coveted her wealth (she was no threat, and he already had her wealth). Octavian then conspired to cover up the execution by concocting the suicide story in order to protect his public image. This is all, of course, laughable to anybody familiar with 1st Century BCE Roman politics. Roman leaders did not hide assassinations, executions, or murders. They boasted of them! If Octavian had wanted Cleopatra dead, he would have cut her down and been done with it. No cover-up, no fabrications. In fact, this is exactly what he did with her son, Caesarion. It was no secret, and Roman historians never made it out as such. Hence Brown's argument collapses.
As for the method of Cleopatra's suicide, the snake story has already been discredited by real historians. The general consensus is that she took poison (Cleopatra was said to have been an expert in poisons), which was a common method of suicide in her day.
In the end, Pat Brown's book is merely another attempt to re-cast the famous Egypto-Macedonian queen in a more sympathetic light for the 21st Century mind, a way of putting our own time-stamp on a popular figure from the past. In my opinion, Cleopatra needs no up-dating. It's frankly delusional and a bit dishonest. Cleopatra lived by the standards of her day, not ours.

Very Good

A very interesting read although there will the usual number of people who will say this is fiction it is a rethinking of what is called history. Pat Brown is a criminal profiler and brings her expertise to the problem of Cleopatra's death. She is quite open on how she became interested in the problem and develops her thesis slowly, at times a bit too slowly but thoroughly. Her pointing out that there are numerous conflicting stories of Cleopatra's death, how she died and the facts, such as they are, were not reported until years later make the official story or stories, there are at least a couple, seem a like a cover up. Read with an open mind, this is a good book and shows that history does deserve to have second and maybe third looks taken over incidents that we consider truth.

Let's face it, we'll never know ...

... nor will Ms. Brown, but then she doesn't pretend otherwise. This is her interpretation as a leading criminal profiler which she offers to the readers for their consideration, and should be taken in that light. An interesting alternative to the accepted Cleopatra/Mark Antony Love-Story-meets-Snakes-Alive! hokum.

I remember watching the original television programme and how enthralIing I found it, especially as I'd never given much thought to the subject in the past. Pat Brown's book takes her theories a step further, and you have to give the author credit for the exhaustive research she's undertaken to back up her beliefs, including detailed analysis of naval warfare strategy, boat-building and route-marching! She examines the political reality of the world in which these fascinating people lived, the most likely (and self-serving) motivations behind all their actions, and the events leading up to the final show-down at Actium. The book isn't perfect by any means: some readers disliked her style of writing but I found it enjoyable, and made what could have been a dry treatise into a very readable (and sometimes quite funny) detective story. Her theories at times seem more to do with wishful thinking than any real evidence, and some of her arguments don't really hold water in my view. She does blot her copybook with the final chapter giving her interpretation of the final hour/days of Mark Antony and Cleopatra. Unfortunately she presents this in a fictional form, and it reads like a chapter in a pretty bad and rather fanciful romantic novel. Stretches the credibility a bit.

There are other flaws certainly. From early on she disses Plutarch (one of the few sources available on the subject) as being fanciful, biased and prone to exaggeration. Later on though, and when it suits her purpose, she quotes his writings in support of her argument. The fact is that the few sources available are second or third hand (am I right in remembering that Plutarch got his account of Cleo's death from Octavian himself?) and who knows how biased in favour of Octavian, mistaken, deaf, on the payroll or just plain drunk the writers were at the time. Or they could all be totally correct. Who knows?

Personally I think he done her in, guv, and spun the suicide tale to pacify the Alexandrian mob. True, these fellows weren't too bothered about hiding their murderous crimes, seeing it as a pr coup to demonstrate their superiority over their enemies. However sometimes discretion is the better part of valour, and Octavian by all accounts wasn't daft. He was trying to engineer a tricky take-over of a powerful and wealthy country, and far better to keep the people on side as much as possible rather than risk a costly uprising by openly admitting to murdering their queen, or carting her off to Rome as a spoil of war and really ticking the Egyptians off. Get her out of the way pdq, blame it on her hormones and keep your own hands clean. Job's a good'un.

On the other hand, neither do I subscribe to the author's view that suicide would never have been an option for Carry On Cleo, a feisty lady who always had a Plan B, C and E up her sleeve. I think her number was up, and she knew it. She was a prisoner of Octavian with no bargaining power, or even much army, left, Anthony was dead as a doornail and she herself had very little chance of survival even if she got as far as being paraded in ignominious defeat back in Rome. As a long-term prisoner she would still have remained a figurehead to her countrymen back in Egypt and therefore a permanent threat to Octavian, much as the incarcerated Mary Queen of Scots was to Elizabeth all those years. Octavian had no reason to keep her alive for long, so better to give him the finger and go out with a show of bravado.

So what is my final assessment? I think she committed suicide and also that Octavian murdered her. Depends on what day of the week it is and whether there's an R in the month. The point is, Pat Brown's enthralling book, warts and all, made me think twice about the accepted version of events. Read it, enjoy it for what it is - a different viewpoint, fascinatingly told - and by the end of it, if nothing else, you'll know a heck of a lot more than you did about the battle of Actium!

Well-researched and written

First, an upfront disclaimer: I was an early reviewer of the draft of this book and I'm cited extensively within. Having said that, I find "Strategic Communication..." to be the most comprehensive and accurate book available on this topic. Paul has done extensive research and tapped into plethora experts and practitioners to accurately protray both the concept and the process that has come to be known as strategic communication.

Three audiences will benefit from this effort: government and military practitioners; academicians, particularly those teaching at professional military education colleges and institutions and; government and military leaders. That latter is perhaps most important. The information age has launched strategic communication to the forefront of enabling success of both policy and military objectives. On the other hand, strategic communication, if misunderstood or misapplied can have a correspondingly catastrophic impact. Prior to publication of this book there was no single source to reference that considers the totality of both these challenges and opportunities. Chris Paul provides a real service in that regard.

This is a book well worth reading.

About the Author

M.R. Haberfeld is a Professor of Police Science in the Department of Law, Police Science and Criminal Justice Administration at John Jay College of Criminal Justice in New York City. She was born in Poland and immigrated to Israel as a teenager. Prior to coming to John Jay, she served in Israeli Defense Forces, in a counter-terrorist unit and left the army at the rank of a Sergeant; she then joined the Israel National Police, and left the force at the rank of Lieutenant. She also worked for the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, in the New York Field Office, as a special consultant. She holds two Bachelor of Art degrees, two Master degrees, and a Ph.D. in Criminal Justice. Her main interests and expertise are in the area of police training and professional development, with particular emphasis on: police ethics, integrity, leadership, counter-terrorism and use of force in multicultural environments. Her recent publications include a book on police training, titled Critical Issues in Police Training (2002), a co-edited book titled Contours of Police Integrity (2004) Encyclopedia of Law Enforcement, the International Volume (2005) Police Leadership (2005), a co-authored book titled Enhancing Police Integrity (2006) and a co-edited book on Comparative Policing: The Struggle for Democratization (2007). She is currently completing a co-edited book, A New Understanding of Terrorism: Case Studies and Analysis (forthcoming fall, 2008). She also recently co-authored two articles on counter-terrorist response: "Proper Proactive Training to Terrorist Presence and Operations in Friendly Urban Environments", in Understanding and Responding to the Terrorism Phenomenon – A Multi-Dimensional Perspective (2007) and "Police Activities to Counter Terrorism: What We Know and What We Need to Know" (forthcoming Fall, 2008). For the past seven years (2001-2008), she has been involved in developing, coordinating and teaching in a special training program for the New York City Police Department, where she teaches courses in police ethics, leadership and counter-terrorism. Currently, she is also an Academic Coordinator of the Law Enforcement Executive Police Institute for the State of New York, where she oversees the delivery of the training modules and teaches leadership courses. She is involved in two major research studies, one on Use of Force by the Police in 10 different countries, and the other Counter-Terrorism police training response post 9/11, which also involves comparative studies of a number of countries around the world.

Dr. Joseph King received his Ph.D. from CUNY. His doctoral dissertation was on the history, development and centralization of the police in the United Kingdom and the United States. He served for 33 years as the Supervisory Special Agent in Charge of the Terrorist and Middle East Division, US Customs, NY and 2 years as Chief, National Security Section, DHS, NY. He has extensive Criminal Investigative, Undercover, and Court testimonial experience in the European Union and the Middle East. He joined John Jay College in September, 2003 in the Department of Law, Police Science and Criminal Justice Administration. Charles Lieberman is a full-time substitute lecturer in the Department of Law, Police Science and Criminal Justice Administration at John Jay College of Criminal Justice in New York City. He served in the NYPD, with more than 11 years assigned to investigative duties. During his time as a member of NYPD, he was involved in the response to numerous significant events, including both attacks on the World Trade Center (1993, 2001) and the anthrax incident at Rockefeller Center. Charles served as an undercover operative in the NYPD for more than 3 years, and in 1995, trained with the Metropolitan Police in London, participating in their Specialist Operations Training Course, which involved long-term undercover operations. For the last 10 years of his career, he worked in various communities in NYC as a detective, investigating all types of criminal activity, including homicide, robbery, burglary, narcotics, kidnapping, and "white-collar" crime. In 2005, after 15 years, he retired as a detective and entered academia. In 2004, he entered the Criminal Justice Doctoral Program at the City University of New York (CUNY) Graduate Center (GC) and is ABD. He is currently completing his dissertation thesis focuses on the role local communities in the United States can and should play in combating the home-grown terrorist activities. He is expected to defend his dissertation in the Fall of 2008.

One of the best books on terrorism

This book covers up to date data on recent terrorism attacks and historic. This book analyzes policies and practices of counter terrorism in different parts of the world. It is loaded with informative and interesting information. Once I picked this book up I could not put it down! It is very different then the average terrorism book, because it describes the research results from the experience of the researchers. I love this book and I would recommend it. My only compliant is that it is expensive, but it is worth it!! I read this book twice!
