Unusual Love Affair

A Christian story of grieve, hope, redemption and mostly love. The story is told from two points of view, switching between the male and female protagonists. For the most part this works well.

Rachel has just lost her husband, John, to a skiing accident. Both families are devastated, including John's brother Jason, who was on the ski trip when the tragedy occurred. Guilt ridden, Jason wants to help Rachel any way he can. Old feelings surface. Jason wants to rekindle old feelings and Rachel does not, but with a 3-year-old precocious daughter and a newborn son, Rachel needs Jason's help.

Reluctantly, feelings surface on both sides. What will the families say? Is this even "right?" Can Rachel and Jason figure out what is the best thing to so: follow their hearts or keep an appropriate distance? This is a page-turner which both those who like Christian books and those that do not will surely enjoy.

"Tender Vows" is a classic love story with interesting twists. A most enjoyable read. You won't want to put the book down and when finished will want a sequel detailing the future of both these families.

A Tender New Addition from a Fabulous Author!

This was an excellent story written by an excellent author! I love Sharlene MacLaren's work.This is such a different story from the first 3 books I read by her....those were her Daughters of Jacob Kane books. She is super talented and knows how to capture her readers' hearts. She really did a wonderful job with this story. She blended heartache and pain, love and family, friendship and forgiveness, humor and faith all into one incredible story, making this one that is perfect for anyone.

The way Sharlene created Rachel and Jason's characters was phenomenal. They shared a pain so great that I could feel it in my own heart and cried with them. I loved both of these fabulous characters til the very last page and they are still in my heart! I will never forget these amazing people from this book. The love of God shines through them and their families and spills over onto the reader, as you witness the heartache, forgiveness and letting go of the past. And I absolutely can not leave out my most favorite character from this novel....the little sugar plum fairy, Meaggie! SHE WAS ADORABLE! She really added to the tenderness of this story, and that was what topped it off for me, making this an unforgettable story!

So, with a glowing 5 star praise, I most definitely recommend this book to EVERYONE. There is a message of faith, forgiveness and overcoming heartache that will last in your heart for a long time to come when you close the back cover of this book after finishing. And, if you have never read a Sharlene MacLaren book, don't miss out on this one! It's an excellent place to start. If you're already a Shar fan, then this is tender addition to your collection! I can't wait for the next amazing book from this fascinating author!

Perfect for an afternoon escape

I loved Sharlene's Daughters of Jacob Kane series and so I was curious about reading more from her. This is a sweet story about love and forgiveness. Sharlene did a great job of capturing the grief that surrounds loss and the exploration of new feelings as people move forward. The Christian elements are strong, with Rachel and Jason both learning how to listen to the voice of God in their lives. The novel is somewhat light and a bit predictable, despite the subject matter, but it is still a sweet story. Perfect for an afternoon escape.

About the Author

Allen R. Angel received his AAS in Electrical Technology from New York City Community College. He then received his BS in Physics and his MS in Mathematics from SUNY at New Paltz, and he took additional graduate work at Rutgers University. He is Professor Emeritus at Monroe Community College in Rochester, New York where he served for many years as the chair of the Mathematics Department. He also served as the Assistant Director of the National Science Foundation Summer Institutes at Rutgers University from 1967—73. He served as the President of the New York State Mathematics Association of Two Year Colleges (NYSMATYC) and the Northeast Vice President of the American Mathematics Association of Two Year Colleges (AMATYC). He is the recipient of many awards including a number of NISOD Excellence in Teaching Awards, NYSMATYC's Outstanding Contributions to Mathematics Education Award, and AMATYC's President Award. Allen enjoy tennis, worldwide travel, and visiting with his children and granddaughter.

Dennis Runde received his BS and MS in mathematics from the University of Wisconsin–Platteville and Milwaukee, respectively. He has a PhD in Mathematics Education from the University of South Florida. He has been teaching for twenty years at State College of Florida, Manatee, and Sarasota Counties and for ten years at Saint Stephen's Episcopal School. Besides coaching little league baseball, his other interests include history, politics, fishing, canoeing, and cooking. He and his wife Kristin stay busy keeping up with their three sons—Alex, Nick, and Max.

I got an A...

I purchased this book because it was the assigned text for my Elementary Algebra college course.

It had been nearly 30 years (!) since my last math class and I have always been very weak in math but I actually found that, overall, the book explained the procedures for performing the different mathematical and algebraic actions reasonably well, although the book is not intended to be the be-all and end-all of the instruction. You do still have to go to the lectures, pay attention, and take a lot of notes! ;) For that reason, I do think this book might be a poor choice for students trying to learn on their own, either as a referesher, in preparation for CLEP type testing, or in a homeschooling situation (unless a competent instructor is available). Still, I think it is valuable to go through the body of the chapter soon after the lecture and work the problems in the discussion sections before tackling the homework problems, because it will reinforce what was taught in the lecture.

I do feel I must warn people that the later chapters' explanations are often rather abbreviated because they do expect that you will have thoroughly absorbed the contents of earlier chapters and so do not explain many steps that were covered earlier in the book. If you find yourself beginning to get a little bit bogged down, don't wait, get help IMMEDIATELY because you will get yourself in quicksand really fast if you don't have the basics down solid and the book won't be as much help as you need then. Trust me on this one - luckily I had done well enough on my earlier tests and quizzes and kept up with all my homework so I could afford to basically tank the final and still squeak into my A, because I completely crashed and burned in chapter 8!

Although it's a heavy book to lug around, I appreciated the large visual format, uncrowded page layouts and clear typeface. Not much highlighting needed in this book due the color coding (although I did use quite a few Post-It flags and sticky notes to mark certain important things and add my own notations) so if this is a gen-ed for you it may be a good choice to rent this one and save the money to buy the books in your major subject that you'll be most likely to use as reference down the line.

Overpriced waste of trees

Overpriced waste of trees. A hodgepodge of problems coupled with instructions on how to solve 25% of them. Totally worthless without the 'mymathlab' access code ($99 extra if not buying this book new).

This book did teach me one thing, though: the order of operations. 1. Read chapter in this book 2. Get problem from this book 3. Google/go to khan academy for a coherent lesson.

For as expensive as it is, you would think that it would be more than just a problems workbook. But then, poor students are the ones getting stuck with the cost, so who cares.

Best Math Text That I Have Ever Used!

This book has step-by-step instructions that teaches students exactly what they need to know in an easy-to-follow format. I have never had a math textbook that was this well written. You definitely will be able to complete the practice problems without any major problems by following the examples.

About the Author
Thich Nhat Hanh is a Vietnamese Buddhist monk. His life long efforts to generate peace and reconciliation moved Martin Luther King, Jr. to nominate him for the Nobel Peace Prize in 1967. He is the founder of Van Hanh Buddhist University in Saigon, and has taught at Columbia University and the Sorbonne. He is the author of Being Peace, The Miracle of Mindfulness, Peace Is Every Step, and 75 other books.

The cover photo itself (that of a monk bent in prayer) speaks volumes about the contents of the book - that of prayer, prayer and prayer. In the likeness of books on prayer by Thich Nhat Hanh, this one seeks to uncover the benefits of meditation as prayer. The author proposes many benefits and (if one is to believe) all peoples in the world, regardless of race, language or religion, should allow themselves the benefit to sit in silence, meditating either in silence, with a chant, with words from Scripture, or with concentration on the breath. The latter, when done with full concentration, is able to nourish and to heal the mind, body and spirit. The author provides various exercises on how to meditate using the breath at the end of his book. I believe some of these exercises have been covered in his other books as well.

The author quotes from Christian Scripture and even uses the Lord's Prayer - the "Our Father" - in one of his examples on meditative prayer. Really, this is a book not only for Buddhist meditation practitioners but for all seekers of meditation practices. The exercises to still the mind apply to all races, language or religion. If we can all practice the mindfulness that the author writes of, we can apply the practice to our faiths. For example, a Christian could use the ability to stay in tune with silence to meditate on God's Word, or a Buddhist could use this ability to be silent within to concentrate on a chant. The idea is really how one can grow to befriend silence in view of the opposing attacks from the noise of daily living - television, media, people around us, loud music, our fears and worries, the pursuit of desires and wants, the list goes on.

I like the book for the solace and comfort and the encouragement it contains. As one who enjoys silence, I could embrace the spiritual benefits of meditation that the author writes about. I wish more people will practise meditation because then the "collective consciousness" (as Thich Nhat Hanh calls it) of the created world can only get better and in turn rub the sense of peace, joy and tranquility to others. One of my favorite passages in the New Testament is the story in Mark about the woman who is healed when she touches Jesus' garment. Jesus, walking in a crowd "perceiving in himself that a power had gone forth from him" immediately turned around in the crowd and asked, "Who touched my garments?" I thought of this passage and finally came to understand a little of Jesus' reaction as I read Thich Nhat Hanh's beautiful little book on prayer.Hanh's descriptions of prayer and his examples of praying allowed me to see, maybe for the first time, to experience prayer as energy and to feel its power. How wonderful to realize how this energy connects all being and even more wonderful to know that as human beings we have the ability (and responsibility) to direct the energy (the ground of being) for the good of all. Thich Nhat Hanh's book is practical not in a "how to" sense but in a "practice" sense. May it help you, as it did me, to make the practice of prayer as ordinary, as real, as powerful, as life-giving as . . .breathing.

Thich Nhat Hanh is one of my favorite authors. This book is such an easy read.....I started reading it in the morning and finished it that day! This book will help you have a better understanding about prayer, it can help you improve your own prayer life, and it can help you realize things about prayer that you might not have thought of before. This is excellent! You will be revived and refreshed from reading this. It can definitely help you grow in your prayer life. Prayer is powerful!

Nate Is On a Quest to Find Love- Satisfying Read

I saw the blurb on this book and just had to read it. And having read it? Very satisfying!

It started with a nice introduction about the cover art. The painting that is the cover was what inspired the author to create the whole story. I just love learning how a book is born.

This particular story is an m/m romance, but it is one of the unique ones in that genre (at least that is my humble opinion). I have to read through many book blurbs in this genre to find the heartwarming ones since I am partial to slow build relationships and I like the inclusion of family and daily circumstances that make the characters and their stories more real to me. Not to say, I can't enjoy any other pace and plot style, but this is my favorite type. I guess what I just said can be construed as a promise or a warning depending on what YOU enjoy. Don't get me wrong in thinking that Acrobat was boring because it was not. There were some definitely exciting and passionate moments, but these were also sprinkled with the main character, Nate, doing a lot of thinking and re-accessing his life.

The story is about a man in his mid-forties who is a college professor. He is well-liked and has a good life with plenty of family and friends, but he is missing something. He thought he found that something with his former partner, but his former partner is a police officer who was not willing to come out of the closet because of his career. Nate has an interesting family dynamic in that he is a gay man with an ex-wife who has been and still is his best friend and a loving, accepting grown up son. Nate and his ex, Melissa, only got together because one night's mistake when they were teens made a baby. Now, Melissa is hap'ly remarried and nagging Nate to find his true love.

Things start to happen in Nate's sedate life as he is involved in taking care of the lonely teen boy, Michael who reminds him of his absent son, living across the hall with his much-absent, formidable and enigmatic, Uncle Dreo. At the college, Nate is forced to deal with faculty jealousy and politicking and the sudden return of a former student, Sean, has the potential to give his love life a boost.
But its not until the Chicago mafia gets involved that his life really takes a turn.

As I mentioned before, the plot starts out slowly really delving into Nate's character before it goes to some more active scenes. There are several mini plots that all tie-in to Nate's life and the story switches back and forth between them though not in a confusing way.

The descriptive background offered by different aspects of Chicago: the neighborhood and apartment building, the college, the restaurants and entertaining and the Italian traditional family stuff with Michael and Dreo was fascinating and just added to the richness of the plot.

The characters were great. As I got to meet each of them, I liked the way each one had a backstory and were real instead of just background for Nate. I really like how Dreo was written. There was a little disappointment because I wanted more of him. He was larger than life. For most of the book, his thoughts are unknown and we just have those well described facial expressions and body language to give us hints. Unfortunately for Nate, we as the readers catch on before he does so I spent some of my time muttering to Nate (yes, I called him names even though I like him- very bad of me I know). Michael was a fun character when he was in the scenes and I loved his interactions with Nate.

So for those who like a slow build romance with lots of backstory, this is definitely the book for you.

I Wish It Was Longer

Although I really liked this book I'm only giving it three stars because the two main characters don't hook up till half way into the book...and while the beginning of the book is OK and learning about the characters is great before they have a relationship and have sex (which is my favorite part because i like the way Mary Calmes write) I was left disappointed when it ended because it felt like the relationship just got started. So while it was a good book if your a fan of Mary Calmes you'll like this new one....it was too short for me....but maybe there will be a second book!!!!

Great story!

I'm a huge fan of Mary Calmes and Acrobat would have to rank in the top 5 of my favorites from her. Ann87's review is spot on and would have to agree that Calmes changed up her formula of story telling a bit in Acrobat.

The first half of the book doesn't provide much direction but the readers are immersed with her usual lovable characters as they are developed. While there was romance throughout the book, the true love interest didn't occur until much later and even then, it was subtle realization that two neighbors who had a mutual goal in raising a teenaged boy (Dreo as the adoptive parent and Nate as the boy's friend/mentor) meshed so well together. One of my pet peeves with some of her previous books (and the genre in general) is instant attraction followed by multiple scenes of sex which disrupt the story flow. (I understand a lot of that is added at the behest of publishers.) Acrobat had the right mix that blended in well.
