The Jew's Body, by Sander Gilman

Drawing on a wealth of medical and historical materials, Sander Gilman sketches details of the anti-Semitic rhetoric about the Jewish body and mind, including medical and popular depictions of the Jewish voice, feet, and nose. Case studies illustrate how Jews have responded to such public misconceptions as the myth of the cloven foot and Jewish flat-footedness, the proposed link between the Jewish mind and hysteria, and the Victorians' irrational connection between Jews and prostitutes. Gilman is especially concerned with the role of psychoanalysis in the construction of anti-Semitism, examining Freud's attitude towards his own Jewishness and its effect on his theories, as well as the supposed "objectiveness" of psychiatrists and social scientists.

From Publishers Weekly
Circumcision engages Jewish males in a powerful paradox: while establishing their religious and cultural identity, it marks them as profoundly different in others' eyes. This difference manifests itself in perceptions of the Jewish male's habits and physiognomy. No matter what tongue he speaks, the Jew's language is always different and therefore suspect. Even Christ's final words--those of a Jew in Aramaic--must be "translated into Greek, Latin, German or English for the self-labeled Christian reader to understand." During the Austrian monarchy, Jews' feet were construed as weaker than other men's, disabling them from military service and signaling "their inability to be full citizens." In three central chapters, Gilman demonstrates how Freud's theory of creativity, which holds that artists sublimate unacceptable characteristics, universalizes his experience as a Viennese Jew compelled to "deny his essence" into a property of the human psyche. Applying the techniques of literary criticism to predominantly European myths, documents and artworks, Gilman ( Jewish Self-Hatred ) has written an intriguing interpretive history of the Jewish male body. Illustrated.

From Library Journal
Gilman (humane studies, Cornell Univ.; history of psychiatry, Cornell Medical Coll.) has produced a weighty book of essays on the evolution of hatred toward Jews in Western culture. The hatred has conjured up a series of bodily images of the prototypical Jew. Aspects of this vast fantasy are painstakingly examined from the image of the clovenfoot to that of the Jewish voice and nose. Gilman is particularly adept in dissecting the corpus of 19th- and 20th-century pseudoscience which sought to take an intellectual approach to the subject. Medieval images often have a way of recurring even in our own times. Gilman tries to show how modern psychiatry beginning with Freud and modern medicine have struggled to come to terms with these images. This book, densely written and academic in approach, is recommended for libraries with strong Judaica and sociology holdings.

Oreimo Art Book
By v4vendetta
There are only a couple pages that represent the "artbook" part (the first 20) and the rest of the pages (roughly 156) have some pieces of art that cover both pages. There are also interviews with the CV voice actors and some shots of scenes from the anime. There are roughly 10 or so pages so straight text all in Japanese (as is the rest of the book) which I can't read but it looks like it could be light novel material. Also what I received wasn't exactly what you'd call hardcover, but it isn't softcover either. Either way, I suppose Tankobon Hardcover refers to the hard cardstock like material you'll usually see on artbooks. All in all, this is more like an official fanbook or guidebook. Oreimo was one of the first anime I saw so it's definitely a nice collectors item.

Well-done guide to the anime series
By Patrick F. Conolly
Hard to say just how to rate this. Mostly I just wanted to let buyers know what this consisted of.
It's a fan book for the Oreimo (the short name) anime, which lasted one season. It is all in Japanese, which I don't read.

If the wide bars on the cover, blocking part of the view, make you suspect nude pictures inside - well, that's not the case. This is the slipcase cover, the actual book cover shows Kirino and Kuroneko in very skimpy bikinis. Honestly for me this alone is worth the price. Very few of the inside illustrations are anywhere that revealing. The TV show itself didn't really indulge in "fan service", and this book is true to that.

Inside, there is a 20 page illustration gallery, most of them full page. Then a map of the area where the characters live. Then 20 pages of photographs of the voice actresses for those two characters. Followed by Character Guides for all the main characters (a few pages each), including photos of, and interviews with, their voice actors/actresses.

Next are episode guides, two pages for each of the regular season episodes, and the additional episodes which are in the Oreimo DVD/Blu-Ray package. These are accompanied by several small scenes for each.

A few pages go into Kirino's and Kuroneko's favorite characters, Scarlet Witch Meruru and Maschera, respectively.

There's lots of other little details - like illustrations and I guess brief descriptions of all the other games that are shown in the series.

Fan books for TV shows are not really my thing, and even if I could read Japanese I probably wouldn't care about the interviews anyway. But, I'd say it is a really well done package. So I'll give it 4 stars.

cute! not exactly an "art book", however (not that I mind)
By Amazon Customer
Super cute! More of a fan book than an art book as advertised, and despite how the cover looks, there is nothing NSFW in this book! (even the cover, they are actually in bikinis. lol) good quality and adorable!

Women Who Think Too Much: How to Break Free of Overthinking and Reclaim Your Life, by Susan Nolen-Hoeksema

"Groundbreaking research . . . Women Who Think Too Much tells why overthinking occurs, why it hurts people, and how to stop." ―USA Today

It's no surprise that our fast-paced, overly self-analytical culture is pushing many people―especially women―to spend countless hours thinking about negative ideas, feelings, and experiences. Renowned psychologist Dr. Susan Nolen-Hoeksema calls this overthinking, and her groundbreaking research shows that an increasing number of women―more than half of those in her extensive study―are doing it too much and too often, leading to sadness, anxiety, and depression. She challenges the assumption―heralded by so many pop-psychology pundits of the last several decades―that constantly expressing and analyzing our emotions is a good thing.

In Women Who Think Too Much, Nolen-Hoeksema shows us what causes so many women to be overthinkers and provides concrete strategies that can be used to escape these negative thoughts, move to higher ground, and live more productively. Women Who Think Too Much will change lives, and is destined to become a self-help classic.

From Publishers Weekly
Practically everyone agonizes over decisions or situations from time to time, but overthinkers carry analysis and introspection to unhealthy extremes, "getting caught in torrents of negative thoughts and emotions,"according to this book. Even minor events can trigger a chain of second-guessing in which negative emotions are "amplified instead of managed." Kneading damaging thoughts like dough, overthinkers fall victim to a "yeast effect" that causes negativity to grow and take control of their lives, distort their perspectives and damage relationships, careers and emotional (and perhaps physical) health. Nolen-Hoeksema, a University of Michigan psychology professor and author of five professional books, explores why people overthink, contends and explains why too much thinking is predominantly a woman’s disease and prescribes a three-step program to overcome overthinking. Citing many studies (including her own) and occasionally zooming in on particular cases, she offers no-nonsense, reasoned and easy-to-understand advice and strategies, as well as a quiz to help readers recognize their own patterns of overthought.

From Library Journal
Contrary to popular opinion, it's not good to spend too much time analyzing your thoughts and feelings, claims this University of Michigan psychologist. And women are especially guilty of this sin.

Review

“The question of whether Nolen-Hoeksema is onto something was slam-dunked by the ‘I know exactly what she means' reactions of women who caught sight of the title.” ―The Washington Post

“A must read for any woman who has ever felt stuck in her life, and any man who has been confused by why the women they love get so ‘caught up thinking’ they can’t enjoy life. Nolen-Hoeksema offers practical methods to self-diagnose and pathways toward greater emotional freedom.” ―William S. Poor. Repetitious anecdotes that go nowhere
By 33 year old lawyer
If you are prone to ruminate and worry, you probably think this book sounds like some kind of Godsend. I mean, the title hit it on the head, right? Sounds like it describes you to a t? Unfortunately, the book doesn't deliver. It's just one lengthy anecdote after another of various women who think too much, with overly simplistic solutions on how they can/should stop. I rarely give a book one star, but this book is especially noxious because it sometimes takes on a lecturing, unsympathetic tone, which should alienate most readers. I wish I could describe it better, but frankly, there's just not that much to this book...The BEST book I have ever read on worrying? Edmund Hallowell's "Worry." That guy is a genius, and it's beautifully written. Other good books if you are a worrier? The cognitive therapy books by David Burns; the big bestseller was "Feeling Good" but I think he has many...The book isn't as fun to read as Hallowell's but if you can actually learn to really do the written cognitive therapy exercises, that will get a major handle on your worries. BTW, neither one of those books is sexist; human beings as a group are examined.

The Killing Lessons: A Novel, by Saul Black

"This novel breaks brilliant. It's hard to tell what's the best part of The Killing Lessons: the sweaty-palm plot that races along like a squadcar on a high-speed pursuit, the breathtaking depictions of the characters, good and bad, or author Black's inimitable style. My vote? All three." -Jeffery Deaver, New York Times bestselling author of The Skin Collector and Solitude Creek

In their isolated country house, a mother and her two children prepare to wait out a blinding snowstorm. Two violent predators walk through the door. Nothing will ever be the same.

When the two strangers turn up at Rowena Cooper's isolated Colorado farmhouse, she knows instantly that it's the end of everything. For the two haunted and driven men, on the other hand, it's just another stop on a long and bloody journey. And they still have many miles to go, and victims to sacrifice, before their work is done.
For San Francisco homicide detective Valerie Hart, their trail of victims-women abducted, tortured and left with a seemingly random series of objects inside them-has brought her from obsession to the edge of physical and psychological destruction. And she's losing hope of making a breakthrough before that happens.
But the murders at the Cooper farmhouse didn't quite go according to plan. There was a survivor, Rowena's ten-year-old daughter Nell, who now holds the key to the killings. Injured, half-frozen, terrified, Nell has only one place to go. And that place could be even more dangerous than what she's running from.
In this extraordinary, pulse-pounding debut, Saul Black takes us deep into the mind of a psychopath, and into the troubled heart of the woman determined to stop him.

Review

“Shockingly good writing…It’s impossible not to be swept away by its propulsive momentum. The appeal of this dark and intensely disquieting book isn’t entirely visceral either. By shifting the narrative point of view, Black allows us to peer into the depths of his many richly developed characters, from the surprisingly complex killers and their dedicated hunters to the supporting players who pop up only to be ruthlessly disposed of.” ―The New York Times Book Review

“Compelling . . . graphic and disturbing. Black utilizes the psychological edge of his characters to elevate the story.” ―Associated Press

“The troubled, vulnerable Valerie is a strong and believable character, and she and her colleagues amount to an unusually admiring portrait of police work… Black squeezes every last ounce of suspense out of this story. One violent climax follows another…The Killing Lessons is state of the art in the ever-darkening serial-killer genre.” ―The Washington Post

“For nine months The Girl on the Train has been lauded as the best thriller of 2015, but it has some real competition with the arrival of The Killing Lessons. . . . Violent but never gratuitous, Duncan’s first crack at a thriller is a master class in suspense. Phrases like “page-turner” and “it kept me up all night!” get thrown around a lot in the book business, but The Killing Lessons is hands-down the most compelling, addictive novel I’ve read this year.” ―Bookpage

“At the start of this exceptional police thriller, two armed men show up at an isolated farmhouse outside Ellinson, Colo., with fatal results for the Cooper family. . . . Readers will hope [Valerie] returns soon in another nail-biter.” ―Publishers Weekly (starred)

“All of the serial-killer staples are accounted for: self-destructing detective, slippery killer, and sympathetic future victims. But Black, a pseudonym for acclaimed dark-fantasy author Glen Duncan (The Last Werewolf, 2011), twists the formula with a killer who defies the coldly calculating criminal mastermind archetype, an unblinking willingness to off characters he's convinced readers to like, and a hokum-free thread of reawakening lost souls. [A] must-read for those who like their psychological thrillers raw.” ―Booklist (starred)

“A taut, smart thriller guaranteed to keep readers on the edge of their seats. Not to be missed.” ―Library Journal (starred)

“Ending the rampage of two sadistic serial killers may depend on a substance-abusing homicide detective facing an old lover and an unknown nemesis in this raw and utterly readable thriller. . . . [Black] cooks up mayhem among mortals, creating a duo from Of Mice and Men by way of Thomas Harris without the fava beans.” ―Kirkus Reviews (starred)

“Unbelievably good...this one has it all.” ―Lee Child, New York Times bestselling author of Personal

“The Killing Lessons is a dark, twisted, and deeply compelling read. Saul Black perfectly inhabits each of his characters, even the most deranged among them, and weaves a breathless thriller that is as beautiful as it is terrifying.” ―Lisa Unger, New York Times bestselling author of Crazy Love You

“This novel breaks brilliant. It's hard to tell what's the best part of The Killing Lessons: the sweaty-palm plot that races along like a squadcar on a high-speed pursuit, the breathtaking depictions of the characters, good and bad, or author Black's inimitable style. My vote? All three.” ―Jeffery Deaver, New York Times bestselling author of The Skin Collector and Solitude Creek

“Completely mesmerizing! Black delivers a powerhouse of a thriller: two terrifying villains versus one damaged cop with numerous lives in the balance. Not to be missed.” ―Lisa Gardner, New York Times bestselling author of Fear Nothing

“Do not read this. No reader deserves to be terrified like this.” ―Linwood Barclay, New York Times bestselling author of Never Look Away and No Time for Goodbye

“If you want to ruin a perfectly good weekend with a gut-wrenching, spine-tingling, deeply disturbing, edge-of-the-seat-thrilling crime novel, The Killing Lessons is your ticket. Beware.” ―Chris Pavone, New York Times bestselling author of The Expats and The Accident

“The Killing Lessons is the best thriller I've read in years. It's so realistic at times that I had to stop and catch my breath. The relationship between these two killers, and the woman who is trying to capture them, is intense and tangible. This is the first book that I've finished, then turned immediately back to page one so I could experience it all over again. It's mind-blowing, terrifying, visceral, disturbing, and gorgeously written and I've been telling everyone I know that they have to pick up this book!” ―Chevy Stevens, New York Times bestselling author of That Night

The Killing Lessons
By S Riaz
"The world was full of women not noticing the men who were noticing them."

Sometimes you just want to read a really fast paced thriller, full of suspense and edge of your seat excitement and this ticks every box. It begins with Rowena Cooper, a widowed mother of two children, who curses her stupidity in feeling safe in her remote house, when two men walk – rather than break – in. and her nightmare begins…

The two men have been murdering women throughout the country and homicide detective, Valerie Hart, is the officer in charge of an investigation which goes back over three years and has haunted her for the past seven months. Now she is working with Special Agent Carla York, but Valerie cannot help feel that Carla is not completely on her side. Drinking too much and depressed by a love affair which fell apart some time ago, Valerie is an intelligent and driven officer. However, her team are just fishing in the dark and nothing seems to result in any leads. Poring over evidence night after night, Valerie knows that a break can only come with more victims and the past victims are always there, haunting her thoughts.

What follows involves a serial killer haunted by his own demons, a woman held prisoner, a detective who is under attack and a child who knows who the killer looks like. This novel keeps up the pace all the way through, with fascinating, flawed characters, unlikely heroes and some extremely creepy scenes. I really hope that this book has a sequel, as I will surely be reading on if it has. Highly recommended for anyone who enjoys intelligent, well written thrillers. Lastly, I received a copy of this book from the publishers, via NetGalley, for review.

The same morbid fascination as a multi-car wreck
By Trudie Barreras
Well, it was my own fault that I ended up enmeshed in this book. I didn’t HAVE to choose to read it, although it was one of the few viable options on my Vine “queue” at that point. Once I started, of course, it held the same morbid fascination as a multi-car wreck on the highway.

It’s too bad there isn’t a dual rating system available, like they use for various sports competitions – one set of points for technical quality and one for enjoyment of the presentation. Saul Black’s “The Killing Lessons” is pure horror from start to finish, and there is way too much “collateral damage” – but simultaneously, there is exquisite description and deeply appealing characterization. Of course I know that the gruesome happens, and that normally sensitive human beings in law enforcement fields have to deal with the unthinkable and indescribable, and in the process become victims of PTSD. It’s just that in general I’ve chosen to avoid the grimmest of the “thriller” type of narrative where all this is played out in gory detail.

Anyway, this book is not for the faint of heart; but it IS masterfully articulated and vividly plotted. I have been told that at times a “critical” review, if honest, can help other readers to evaluate a story realistically; this is my best effort at such a review.

Dark, explicit
By Lynn Benson
One thing I THOROUGHLY enjoyed about the writer's style was the ability to hear the characters voice, to get inside their heads. He captured the humanness of them all. A lead character kept dwelling on a past relationship. Thoughts to herself, comments. And the killers, boy, with all the repetition of thoughts and actions - the reader was able to really look inside of the characters. We're human -- you know when something bothers us, we think on it over and over and can't get something out of our heads? It wasn't conveyed in those types of words, it was conveyed in paragraphs over and over throughout the book. Exactly like you and I would do. Carry on, but still dwelling. It was an interesting way to write, and I wish more authors could manage it without making a book be 1000 pages.

Biggest downside of this book? Not a single main character was likable until the end of the book. Sure, things about them were likable, but overall he painted dark pictures of everyone. Showed us their (insert negative word here) sides.

I'm not necessarily a serial killer story reader, but I like cop books without so much gore. Some of it was shocking, very disturbing. Go into this book knowing it will be a hard read if you have any delicate sensibilities. I found myself grazing past a paragraph here or there, to be honest. I don't need explicit to get the idea. Personal preference for me only.

As far as pace -- it depends on who you're reading about. There are a lot of stories going on at one time in this book, and it's kind of maddening to read about one story and then to have to get through other chapters before returning to the characters/story that excites you the most!

Not a lot of happy in this book.

Functional movement practice deals with our ability to move and function more effectively in daily life, according to our specific individual needs. This practice diverts attention from “how the body looks” to the more important question of “how the body moves and functions.” This is not a specific system but rather a systematic approach to practice that can be implemented flexibly, according to each exerciser’s needs and abilities. The book describes the three main components: Practice – Movement – Functioning. Physical practice focuses on movement abilities and skills in a manner that will improve the exerciser’s functioning now and in the future, according to the individual’s needs. Practice in this approach helps to acquire movement skills with an emphasis on optimal technique, where the result is improvement in movement and fitness components. Mobility is essential for all of us. We should be able to cover long distances, lift heavy objects, overcome obstacles, perform tasks accurately and with excellent timing, respond to the environment and to unexpected situations – and at times we may need to perform all of these actions at the same time, with maximal efficiency and with as few injuries as possible. Actionable and clear. Highly recommended.
By Itamar Rogel
I've been training with Uri for years. Uri is not only very knowledgeable (and believe me, he's a true expert), but he has a clear and consistent way to structure all this knowledge and make it work for you. Thanks to this, he has designed a very original and effective approach combining elements and knowledge from Yoga, Pilates, Kettlebells training and more - into one coherent, consistent and clear method. Needless to say - when the book came out I immediately purchased it, wanting to see how Uri shared his knowledge in a book form, and indeed - this book is a pleasure to read and to apply. It is really accessible and gives a concise and actionable way to start training and enjoy the benefits of Uri's method. Highly recommended.

Tripping Over the Truth: The Return of the Metabolic Theory of Cancer Illuminates a New and Hopeful Path to a Cure, by Travis Christoffers

A masterful synchronization of history and cutting-edge science shines new light on humanities darkest diagnosis. In the wake of the Cancer Genome Atlas project's failure to provide a legible roadmap to a cure for cancer, science writer Travis Christofferson illuminates a promising blend of old and new perspectives on the disease. Tripping over the Truth follows the story of cancers proposed metabolic origin from the vaunted halls of the German scientific golden age, to modern laboratories around the world. The reader is taken on a journey through time and science that results in an unlikely connecting of the dots with profound therapeutic implications. Transporting us on a rich narrative of humanities struggle to understand the cellular events that conspire to form malignancy, it reads like a detective novel, full of twists and cover-ups, blind-alleys and striking moments of discovery by men and women with uncommon vision, grit and fortitude. Ultimately we arrive at a conclusion that challenges everything we thought we knew about the disease, suggesting the reason for the failed war against cancer stems from a flawed paradigm that categorizes cancer as an exclusively genetic disease.  For anyone affected by this terrifying disease, and the physicians who struggle to treat it, Tripping Over the Truth provides a fresh and hopeful perspective. It explores the new and exciting non-toxic therapies born from the emerging metabolic theory of cancer. Therapies that may one day prove to be a turning point in the struggle against our ancient enemy. We are shown how the metabolic theory redraws the battle-map, directing researchers to approach cancer treatment from a different angle, framing it more like a gentle rehabilitation rather than all-out combat. In a sharp departure from the current "targeted" revolution occurring in cancer pharmaceuticals, the metabolic therapies highlighted have one striking feature that sets them apart -the potential to treat all types of cancer because they exploit the one weakness that is common to every cancer cell: dysfunctional metabolism.

Review
"An iconoclastic information-rich narrative that boldly challenges our current understanding and treatment of cancer." - Joseph C. Maroon, M.D., author of The Longevity Factor
"This is a great scientific mystery book...This book is for everyone, but should be read by all physicians that treat cancer. I congratulate the author for a marvelous job and highly recommend this book." - Robert L. Elliott, M.D., Ph.D.

"I couldn't put it down and finished it in two days." - George Yu, M.D.

"While acknowledging that the metabolic theory of cancer has been rejected by the scientific establishment for most of its century of existence, the book presents a convincing argument for taking a new look at the work of scientific renegades whose work suggests that a combination of diet modifications and drugs may be a far more effective treatment than genetic treatment, and far less expensive.... A well-written account of a nonstandard but plausible theory of oncology." -- KIRKUS REVIEWS

Very readablel book on the history, theory, and potential of the metabolic theory of cancer.
By Edward Miller
This is a must read for those interested in cancer.

The author uses a historical framework to explain the science, and makes a strong case for cancer as a metabolic disease (as contrasted to a genetic one). More importantly, cures are to come from studies of metabolism, rather than from narrowly targeted treatments aimed as particular mutations.

The treatment is historical, telling the story through the great researchers and their findings, using their stories to explain the science. This makes the book very readable. Telling these stories is not necessary to understanding the science, but it may be necessary to understanding why, and when it was accepted.

After running through various historical figures, such as Warburg (who got his Nobel prize for demonstrating the metabolic abnormality of cancer), the story moves to various interesting modern figures.

By page 93, he reaches the research in Pedersen's lab at John Hopkins University, and the story of the bright Korean biochemist, Young He Ko. She discovers that a simple chemical, 3-bromopyruvate, kills cancer cells better and quicker than most chemotherapy drugs. She achieves the almost unprecedented feat of curing cancers in all of 19 rats, who remain free of their original cancers to the end of their natural life.

One would expect to learn how she got a professorship, fame, and lots of research money. Instead, the academic politics at John Hopkins results in her being terminated, and a law suit, leaving the breakthrough unexploited. (Some believe that this will provide the plot for a movie, and speculate as to which actress should play Dr. Ko). For now, it just makes part of the book read like a novel.

There is drama (starting on p. 109) when the father of a teenager near death from liver cancer hears of the new drug, and obtains approval for it to be administered in Germany (approved only because it was his only hope of evading his impending death). The unemployed biochemist travels there, and waits nervously while the first human receives it. He was being kept alive by tube feeding. There are no serious side effects, and he asks to eat. The outcome is that instead of not surviving to his 17th birthday as the doctor's predicted, he recovers enough to go to John Hopkins Medical school to lecture, reaches his 18th birthday (a party which the still unemployed Dr. Ko attends). Alas, he eventually dies from an unrelated pneumonia, but the drug had achieved a "miraculous" cure. Heart breaking drama here.

The story then moves on to the cutting edge research on the genetics of cancer, and how when the genomes of various tumors were sequenced, there was found there was no pattern to the mutations, creating an embarrassment for those whose careers had been based on the genetic theory of cancer.
Naturally those who had dedicated their career to cancer as a genetic disease were disappointed, and elaborate new theories, but several of the leaders have shifted their focus to metabolism. Although it is easy to say the hundreds of millions spend on genetic research was wasted, it was something that should have been done, and it appears we now know approaches that do not work.

As a subplot (p152) is the story of James Watson (whose Nobel prize was for discovering the genetic code) and his shift from emphasis on genetics (which naturally served his self interest), to efforts to get the Ko formulation, and him expressing support for the metabolic theory (when famous geneticists abandon the genetic theory, it is more convincing).

The story moves on to Dr. Seyfried (p. 167) and how he drifts into cancer research on discovering that starving mice slowed tumor growth, and a drug that seemed effective against cancer actually seemed to work by stopping the mice from eating as much (the control mice not given the drug died much quicker, but control mice restricted to eating only as much as the treated mice chose to eat, did just as well).

This resulted in the publication of a path breaking book, The Metabolic Theory of Cancer. " While this is a very good book, and a must read for professional cancer researchers, the biochemistry is tough for non-professionals. For laymen, one can get an understanding from "Tripping over the Truth" with much less work.

Even the professional may find that the historical narrative of this book makes it easier to understand Seyfried's book (Cancer as a Metabolic Disease: On the Origin, Management, and Prevention of Cancer), with much less work, and without being lost in the details. Such reader's may wish to skip the first two parts, which provide historical and scientific background).

Christofferson's book is cheaper, slightly more up to date (in a field that is moving fast, partially due to Seyfried's recent book), and more fun to read. After reading Christoffer's account of how Seyfried came to write his book, and what he found, the professionals will be motivated to read the more technical book written by the great scientist himself.

Dr. Seyfried explores ketones as the explanation for why calorie restriction works, and shows that a ketogenic diet can be effective (at least in mice). The story moves on to the history ketogenic diets, and to a Florida researcher, D'gostino (p.211), who gets good results in mice from such a diet, especially when combined with hyperbaric oxygen therapy.

Small scale human tests of ketogenic diets for brain cancers begin (p. 196) and produce encouraging results.

Since many reading this review will be those suffering from cancer, what are the conclusions for such patients The first is the high potential of 3-bromopyruvate. Patients should not rush out and try to get this and treat themselves. If incorrectly formulated, it could be fatal. However, they should keep their eyes open for trials (which are overdue, but virtually certain to come). Those with advance, metastatic cancer should try to be included, even if this requires traveling overseas, and paying their own expenses.

The preliminary evidence is that a ketogenic diet is beneficial, and the book includes an appendix on "Putting Metabolic Therapy to Work". If I was dying from cancer, I would certainly try this.

What are the weak points in the book?

One is that it lacks an index (so those interested in a particular topic can find it). Even the chapter headings and table of contents are non-informative. This is why I mentioned page numbers above.

While it has a list of sources in the back, it is not as well documented as a researcher would want. Fortunately, more can be found in Seyfried's book.

It is clear from the sources he gives, that much of his information derives from traveling around the country interviewing the researchers themselves. This permits him to provide the background that makes the book so readable (even novel like). A benefit of these interviews is that he sometimes mentions results that have not yet been written up and published. This could be valuable to researchers and funders wanting to know what is going on in a fast moving field.

Those interested in the history and politics of science will enjoy the stories of the researchers, and how what should have been obvious leads and inconsistencies were not followed up on. It also becomes clear how problems of funding, human egos and ambitions, and desire not to confess to having wasting time on exploring a blind alley (even though this may keep others from wasting time by going down the same blind alley) has impeded research. Possible cures that are hard to make money from such as 3-bromopyruvate (a known chemical that cannot be patented) and nutritional approaches are not as promptly followed up on as those that can result in a highly profitable drug of marginal use (and he points just how marginal many of the hyped drugs are).

Those in funding positions (government, foundations, and those with money to donate) would benefit from reading this book and thinking about the implications. Drug companies naturally would like funding decisions that lead to new drugs them to patent and market, and research that shows the utility of their products (and lobby for such). However, much higher returns should result from research private firms are unlikely to pursue, research on unpatentable molecules like 3-bromopyruvate, and nutritional therapies.

A story about the struggle for discovery that most people never will see! The women researchers need to read it!

A review of Tripping On The Truth by Travis Christoferson

An engaging book to read for layman as well as professionals!

For the layman, it is readable, fun and packed with information that applies cancers forefronts and your health in general. For the professionals, it will give you a clearer understanding of what is going on behind and beyond the day to day news on cancer research and treatments.

I could not put it down and finished it in 2 days-it reads like a suspense mystery yet has the full impact of what is really going on with the research and problematic issues both in the basic science and clinical practice of cancer biology and future clinical management. Sandwiched within these topics, the reader will have a glimpse of the intrigue, politics, and the fierce competition that most of us never see or understand in the struggles of big research, big players, and huge financial implications in the industry of cancer health.

As a doctor and surgeon, I kept the discipline of examining with my surgical pathologist every cancer operation I performed, hoping to uncover its behavior. What doctors see on H & E stains for microscopic slides are the cancer with strange nucleus containing the DNA and its cell division, mitosis. But if microscopic examination could have shown the strange and abnormal mitochondria energy packets in these cancer cells (seen only with the costly electron microscopy) perhaps we would have, long time ago, embraced the issues of cancer energy abnormalities and not have chased the nuclear DNA as much as we have.

In parts of the book on Peter Pedersen and Young Ko and the discovery of Hexokinase 2 and ultimately 3 Bromo pyruvate, the politics and intrigue reminds me of the heavily debated conflicts that we saw with Rosaland Franklin and James Watson and Francis Crick on the discovery of the structure of DNA (Rosalind Franklin, The Dark Lady of DNA by Brenda Maddox) and Candance Pert and Solomon Synder (Molecules of Emotion by Candice Pert) on the opiate receptor discovery. Both discoveries involved severe competition with a touch of gender discrimination. Could this happen with the discovery of 3 Bromo pyruvate anticancer molecule? Young Ko and Peter Pedersen have not been dealt unfairly or unjustly and this book brings out all these ugly issues and conflicts often seen in high power science as in all other human endeavors.

TCGA the cancer genome atlas project and the obvious pathway
revealed by the PET scans showing another cancer feature.

With failures of the billion dollar chase to uncover the gene mutations of all types of cancers (TCGA), most of us were frustrated and deflated by the futility of the gene mapping approach for future treatment options. So why not look at something obviously staring at us clinicians!

We, as clinical surgeons and oncologists deal with diagnostics daily on patients with localized and advanced cancers managements, we use CAT and PET scans to see the extent of the cancer spread. But rarely did we question how this PET scan came to being. It turns out that what we practicing doctors use to see cancer function is nothing more than the uptake of FDG sugar in the cell and in the mitochondrial hexokinase 2 deformity (almost universal in all cancers with only a few exceptions). After all the PET scan is simply the cancer’s need for sugars and fuel by glycolysis (fermentation) and in the hexokinase 2 in cancer mitochondria discovered by Peter Pedersen.

The review by Ralph Moss in Advances in Cancer Treatment October 2012, a patient cancer advocacy, presented a beautifully written summary and critique of the whole new approach to cancer but actually an old concept with a new trust upon the discovery of the uses of molecules such as Dichloroacetate and 3 Bromopyruvate. More will come to notice in the next five years.

What is also tied to the energy abnormalities of cancers in general is the long history of the study of Caloric Restriction consistently decreasing the growth of cancers seen in animal studies. On a human level, there groups of people and institutions claiming good successes and practice with low calorie high nutrition (1800 calories per day) diets both for cooked and raw foods such as The Caloric Restriction Society, Optimal Health, Hippocrates Institute, Ann Wigmore institute, and Kushi Macrobiotic Institutes etc. In essence most of these organizations have probably been practicing a form of energy deprivation of cancer cells for over 50 years and still going strong, but not accepted by the medical community accept in study scenarios at the National Cancer Institute.

I recommend two books if the readers are really interested in the science behind the popular paradigm shift on cancer research and future cancer patient care.
Tom Seyfried’s book, Cancer as a Metabolic Disease, is a well written narrative of studies done in the last 50 years point to one simple concept. The analogy of the fly fisherman is what we call cast to the upstream problem to have a better chance of landing a fish hook up instead of downstream when the fish already have passed the fly. The metabolic abnormality of these cancers could be the upstream effect which then leads to nuclear gene instability and mutations- not DNA mutations first but the mitochondrial energy packets as the first abnormality.

The second book by Jiri Neuzil, Shazib Pervaiz and Simone Fulda, Mitochondria: The Anti-cancer Target for the Third Millenium is an international consortium of research on targeting energetic metabolism of cancer biology. It is heavier reading than the Seyfried book

Cancer: It's a terrifying diagnosis, often eventually resulting in one of two possibilities: either a prognosis that amounts to a death sentence, or, if more optimistic, a likelihood of "beating it," with the prospect of then spending the rest of one's life with back-of-the-mind worry that it will come back someday. Why have we made so little progress in treating this illness? Why, over four decades after President Nixon declared "war on cancer," do millions of people still experience the ravages of this disease and its toxic conventional treatments? When we set out to build an atomic bomb, we had the Manhattan Project, and we accomplished it. When we decided we wanted to land a man on the moon, we threw money at the idea, and we accomplished that, too. So why, after forty years, billions of dollars, and thousands of biochemists and researchers devoting their careers to solving the mysteries of cancer, have we made shamefully few inroads?

Is there a chance we've approached things from the incorrect angle? Is there a chance that we've mischaracterized the etiology of cancer, and because of this, our therapies, medications, and prevention strategies are misguided and ineffectual? What if, all these years, cancer has had most of us fooled, and all but a few brave and persistent scientists have been so distracted by the *effects* of cancer that we've inadvertently ignored the underlying cause?

These are the questions Travis Christofferson explores in Tripping Over the Truth. In a book that covers cancer from its earliest recognition centuries ago, to therapies and drug trials that are ongoing now, Christofferson makes a stunning case suggesting that the reason our go-to treatments of surgery, radiation, and chemo ("slash, burn, and poison") so often fail to restore health and save lives is that they're targeting the wrong thing. You can't provide an effective solution if you don't know what the problem is. And a growing number of researchers believe we've been throwing solutions around in what amounts to either a guessing game or an ultra-high-stakes version of "whack-a-mole," where as soon as one problem goes away, another pops up somewhere else. But if we could find the root cause--the fundamental underlying problem in cancer--then we can attack it head-on and get rid of it once and for all.

Christofferson details the differences between two competing theories of cancer etiology, with well-researched timelines covering the political, economic, social, and academic forces behind both. The one more widely-held right now is the "somatic mutation theory" (SMT). It posits that cancer is caused by mutations to DNA. Carcinogenic substances cause errors in DNA replication, and this leads to cells that misbehave--they gobble up fuel, they create their own blood supplies (angiogenesis), they poison nearby cells, and they divide and multiply like crazy. They never die, like normal cells are programmed to do (apoptosis), and eventually, they spread from their site of origin and take root somewhere else in the body (metastasis). This theory makes sense, because cancerous cells do have mutated DNA.

However, the competing theory--the metabolic theory--holds that mutated DNA is merely an *effect* of cancer, not the cause. This theory suggests that cancer is the result of an energy problem inside cells--specifically, the mitochondria have lost the ability to adequately perform "cellular respiration" and oxidative phosphorylation--making ATP. In other words, it's an energy generation problem. When mitochondria lose the ability to "respire" and create energy, they revert to fermentation instead, a primitive, highly inefficient survival mechanism that requires enormous amounts of glucose to power a cell. One of the products of fermentation is lactate (lactic acid), which accounts for the acidosis so common in cancer patients, and this is why alkalinizing therapies fail: people don't get cancer because their blood is acidic; their blood becomes acidic because the cancer cells generate so much lactate. It's also why advanced cancer patients waste away (cachexia): the cancer cells "steal" glucose from the rest of the body, growing and spreading, while the rest of the body starves and shrinks.

Think about it: When you haven't slept in a while, you haven't been eating right, and you're under stress, you make mistakes, right? You're tired, and you get sloppy and clumsy. Cells work the same way: when the mitochondria are damaged and can no longer produce energy effectively, cells get sloppy. They make errors in DNA replication--so we can see the mutations here as consequences, not causes.

The real crux of the metabolic theory is the glucose issue. Researchers have known for years that cancer cells are "sugar junkies." They thrive on glucose, and because their mitochondria are either inadequate in number or are dysfunctional, they fail to effectively metabolize fuel sources that healthy cells can use just fine: fatty acids and ketones. The mitochondria are so broken that even in the presence of oxygen, cancer cells must ferment glucose--the "Warburg effect," and an unmistakable hallmark of most cancers.

Cancer cells' "Achilles' heel" is their reliance on glucose for survival. If the metabolic theory holds true, then targeting cancer cells not at the level of DNA, but at the level of metabolism, might hold the key to developing successful therapies. We are still in the early stages of exploring this in the clinical setting (largely using ketogenic diets and hyperbaric oxygen), but Christofferson makes a powerful case for why these non-toxic therapies stand a much better chance of hitting cancer where it hurts than the chemo and radiation, which often take people's lives faster and more brutally than the cancer itself would have, if left untreated. (Moreover, unlike chemo & radiation, metabolic therapies would *spare* healthy tissue -- and in the case of a ketogenic diet, possibly even *strengthen* it. At the very least, metabolic therapies prime the body to better tolerate the harsh effects of conventional treatment.)

Christofferson details the origins of the SMT, and then systematically dismantles its every tenet. For each weakness in the SMT, the metabolic theory has a fascinating strength. Pitted head-to-head, the metabolic theory fits the evidence much more logically and scientifically. It's unfortunate that so much time, money, and research effort have been expended to hit all those "whack-a-moles" one by one with the plastic hammer, when the answer all along might have been simply to unplug the machine and cut off its power supply altogether.

Borrowing from the work of many scientists, Christofferson has written a book appropriate for medical professionals as well as laypeople interested in this topic. The more scientifically minded might go on to tackle Dr. Thomas Seyfried's book, Cancer as a Metabolic Disease. But for those who just want to begin exploring these concepts, Tripping Over the Truth is a great introduction to the beauty and elegance of the metabolic origins theory, without the intimidating biochemistry and physiology. I applaud the author for writing a book about a complex scientific subject that reads like a novel. The prose is highly readable, and the descriptions of the major players provide a good sense of who they are and what motivates them.

If the metabolic theory of cancer proves true, we will have these courageous scientists to thank, for persisting in their beliefs and holding fast to the notion that cancer is not an unsolvable riddle, but rather a biologically and evolutionarily conditioned response to an energy crisis due to mitochondrial insufficiency and dysfunction. And the most beautiful part of all: there are perfectly logical, *non-toxic* therapeutic avenues that can drive a stake right through cancer's heart.
