Michael Rosen is one of the most popular authors of stories and poems for children. One of our favorites!

We love this book! As a parent of two toddlers, I have read a lot of children's books and this is one of my favorites! It is so fun to read and easy for the kids to memorize so they can "read" along. It's also really fun to act out the story, if you're feeling creative. The board book is very sturdy and we haven't had issues yet with durability. I am very pleased with this book and we've even purchased it again as a gift.

About the Author
Joseph F. Healey is Professor Emeritus of Sociology at Christopher Newport University in Virginia. He received his PhD in sociology and anthropology from the University of Virginia. An innovative and experienced teacher of numerous race and ethnicity courses, he has written articles on minority groups, the sociology of sport, social movements, and violence, and he is also the author of Statistics: A Tool for Social Research (10th ed., 2014).

Eileen O’Brien is an Assistant Professor at SUNY-Brockport where her teaching and research interests range from introductory sociology to courses on race, ethnicity, gender, social class and theory. She authored Whites Confront Racism (Rowan and Littlefield, 2001) and has co-authored White Men on Race (Beacon Press, 2003) with Joe Feagin, a pre-eminent scholar on race and ethnic relations. She received her Ph.D. from the U.of Florida in 1999 M.A. from Ohio State in 1996; both degrees in sociology.

Both more and less than the movie

I've been a fan since childhood of "The Long Gray Line," the John Ford film that was based on this book, and so I've wanted to read "Bringing Up the Brass" for a long time. Finally doing so was a rewarding experience -- not only (although mostly) to meet the real Marty Maher behind the Tyrone Power character, but also to see what was gained and what was lost when the novel was adapted to the screen.

If, like me, you come to this book through the prism of the movie, you'll find this story a lot less linear than the movie. Although Marty tells his story (and it's clear from the text that most of this book was literally "as told to" his coauthor Nardi Reeder Campion) in a mostly chronological way, there's still a bit of skipping around and some gaps in the time-frame. Not everything fits together quite as well as it does in the film, but life is like that. The book also lacks much of the movie's schmaltzy sentimentality.

At the same time, the reader who knows the movie will be able to recognize many of the seeds in this book that grew into key scenes on film.

The more interesting and honest task, though, is to try to separate the movie from the book and read (and review) the latter on its own merits. When you do, Marty comes across as a charming and entertaining man with an interesting story to tell. He saw an awful lot in his half-century-plus at West Point, and does seem to have been truly beloved by generations of graduates. He certainly could have filled many more pages with his reminiscences, and it's perhaps a shame that he didn't. I would have liked to have read more about life on the Point and how it changed over the decades.

But this book is Marty's story, not West Point's, and while the two were nearly synonymous -- or so it seems -- for many decades, many people have told the Academy's story. It was up to Marty and his co-author to tell his own, and it's a wonderful thing that he did. He's a man who deserves to be remembered, and remembered with affection -- not only by those who had a chance to know him, but also by those of us who have only experienced him in film or print.

About the Author
Dr. Parr received an MS and PhD (1970) from the University of Chicago and was involved in research in synchrotron radiation research and development, spectroscopy, and ion chemistry at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). He joined the Optical Technology Division in 1986 and was active in developing new calibration and measurement strategies based upon the high accuracy cryogenic radiometer. This includes redefinition of the U.S. National SI units of the candela and lumen based upon measurements directly traceable to the cryogenic radiometer. Dr. Parr retired as Chief of the Optical Technology Division in 2007 and continues to consult on radiometric matters related to remote sensing in addition to editor work on the Elsevier series, Experimental Methods in the Physical Sciences. Dr. Parr has published extensively on his research and has over 100 articles in the scientific literature.
